City to begin annual hydrant flushing Tuesday
Beginning
Tuesday,
Nov. 12, the City of Flor-
ence will be conducting
its annual Hydrant Flush-
ing Program. The flushing
program will last approxi-
mately 12 weeks.
Flushing the water main
is a normal preventive
maintenance procedure
to improve water quality,
safety and test the system
regarding fire-flows.
This program is an im-
portant part of the City
of Florence’s ability to
provide fire protection
service and to ensure that
all hydrants on the system
are in good working con-
dition.
City of Florence Pub-
lic Works personnel will
be flushing the hydrants
Monday through Friday
between 7:30 a.m. and 2
p.m.
The water is safe to
use during this flushing
period. Some areas may
experience discolored or
cloudy water during this
time, but this will only be
temporary. The tempo-
rary discoloration of the
water is an unavoidable
effect from flushing the
water lines and has no
harmful health effects.
If the discoloration lasts
longer than a few hours or
you have any questions,
contact Florence Public
Works at 541-997-4106
during normal weekday
business hours.
After hours, call 541-
997-3515.
If your water looks dis-
colored, let the cold water
run for a few minutes to
clear your water service
line. It is also recom-
mended that you do not
do the laundry for about
two hours to ensure that
the water is clear.
Hydrant flushing is a
method to clean the water
main pipe by using high
water velocity to “flush-
out” sediment and min-
erals that may build up in
the pipe system over time.
The high-water veloc-
ity is created by opening
fire hydrants one at a time
starting from the source
and storage sites toward
the far end of the main
lines.
In this way the whole
water-main line gets
cleaned systematically.
The other benefit of this
flushing is the testing of
the fire hydrants to make
sure they operate proper-
ly.
Customers are encour-
aged to call the City of
Florence Public Works
Department office with
any concerns and ques-
tions at 541-997-4106.
