An art show and public
reception showcasing the
original works of two talent-
ed artists will be presented
in Florence Events Center’s
(FEC) Gallery Five on Th urs-
day, Nov. 14, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Award-winning artist Ber-
nie Herr is well known to the Oregon
coast art community, having been a
driving force with his wife Lu in the
creation of a vibrant showcase for lo-
cal artists at the FEC.
When the FEC fi rst opened, its em-
phasis was theater arts. Bernie and Lu,
along with other visual artists, repre-
sented a vocal force to create Gallery
One and later Gallery Five. Many
wonderful art shows have resulted
from their eff orts artists.
Bernie began painting in oils with a
realistic edge, evolving over the years
to a preference of aqueous media. He
worked in or combined watercolor,
gouache, inks or acrylics to create
a truly unique body of abstract and
eclectic work, which is rich in color,
vibrant and diverse in subject matter.
Over the years, Bernie received
many awards for his art. Among the
venues are Celebrate Arts, Emerald
Art Center and the Watercolor Society
of Oregon where he won six awards
and achieved gold levels. His work is
in private collections in more than a
dozen states, including Hawaii, and
also in Canada, Japan, Poland and Is-
rael.
Having lived in Florence since 1984,
Bernie and Lu recently moved from
their home and studio in Greentrees
to a retirement center in Eugene, leav-
ing behind a large collection of framed
original artwork, greeting cards and
ceramic tiles featuring his iconic im-
ages. A portion of the proceeds from
the sale of his works will be
donated to the Friends of
the FEC “First Impressions”
Youth Art program.
Also showing are the origi-
nal oil paintings of the late
Wolfgang Emil Hofmann.
Born in Dresden, Germany,
Wolfgang served in the U.S. Army
before eventually retiring in Florence
with his wife of 60 years, Dora. Th ey
were 20-year residents of Florentine
Estates.
A skilled landscape painter, Wolf-
gang was entirely self-taught and drew
great inspiration from nature and
coastal ranges. Th e body of work be-
ing displayed showcases his passion
for capturing images of natural won-
ders in his art and refl ects a lifelong
love of gardening and being in the
great outdoors.
Sponsored by Oregon Pacifi c Bank,
this show and reception is produced
in collaboration with Jo Beaudreau
of BeauxArts Fine Art Materials and
Gallery and Cindy Wobbe Estate Sales.
