Almost four minutes had
passed in the first quarter of
Mapleton last home football
game of the season, and the
mood was tense.
The score was 0-0, an odd-
ity for the Sailors which had
become accustomed to
exploding out of the gate
under the Friday night lights
with touchdowns 14 seconds
into the game.
“We had kids in different
spots,” Coach Jeff Green said.
“We were trying to get every-
thing out to the edge because
I knew they were going to try
and stop JJ [Neece]. I wanted
to get some bubble routes
going to get that defense
spread out. They were all
in the box loaded up.”
Greene wanted to
send a message to
Yoncalla — “We don’t
just have JJ. We have a lot
of weapons we could
use,” Greene said.

Stocking of the mid-coast
lakes ended in June. Check
the stocking schedule online
for dates and locations of
stockings.
Warmwater fisheries is still
good in several lakes around
the Florence area including:
Siltcoos, Tahkenitch, Mercer
and Munsel.
SIUSLAW RIVER: Fall
Chinook, cutthroat trout
Fall Chinook fishing con-
tinues to be fair to good on
the Siuslaw. Last week’s rain
pushed some fish up into the
river but there are still plenty
of fish around in the estuary.
Anglers are catching fish on
each tide and it should con-
tinue to improve as we head
into October. The beginning
of September through the
month of October are typical-
ly the best times to catch a
Siuslaw River Chinook.
Due to low forecasted fall
Chinook returns, this year’s
daily bag limit has been
reduced to 1 wild Chinook
per day and 5 per year for the
mid-coast aggregate (Siletz
River to Siuslaw River).
Lake Creek (a tributary of
the Siuslaw River) will be
closed for the fall Chinook
season to protect the forecast-
ed low number of returning
fish.
No wild coho retention for
the 2019 season.
Trout fishing in streams is
open until Oct. 31. Late sum-
mer and fall are typically good
times to target sea-run cut-
throat in the Siuslaw River.
Check the regulations for
open areas and gear restric-
tions.
SILTCOOS &
TAHKENITCH LAKES:
Warmwater species, cutthroat
and rainbow trout
Warmwater fishing has
been good on Siltcoos and
Tahkenitch lakes as well as
many other lakes in the
Florence area. Water tempera-
tures are warm and fish can
be found throughout the lake
in a variety of habitats.
Warmwater fishing will con-
tinue to be good through the
summer and into the fall.
Siltcoos also gets stocked
rainbow trout, check the
stocking schedule for num-
bers and dates of stockings.

Chinook, cutthroat trout
Fall Chinook fishing on the
Alsea River continues to be
fair to good. It has not been
red hot but anglers are consis-
tently catching fish every day
and fish are now spread
throughout the estuary.

Several recreation facility
closures and intermittent road
closures will take place in the
Oregon Dunes National Recre-
ation Area (ODNRA) Horsfall
Road area from Oct. 17-20.
Marine Reserve Engineer
Service Company CLB-23
based in Springfield, Ore., will
engage in training with heavy
equipment and perform gener-
al maintenance in select camp-
grounds and recreation sites.
Visitors to the area are en-
couraged to use caution as they
may encounter road flaggers
and heavy equipment.
Horsfall Beach Campground
& Day Use and Bull Run Stag-
ing Area will both be closed to
public use between Oct. 17-20.
Marines will be operating
heavy equipment to rehabili-
tate the campground, including
leveling campsites and install-
ing new fire rings, picnic tables
and signage. Dozer work on
off-road designated routes will
be completed from the staging
area northwards, to improve
safety and visibility for riders.
Hazard tree removal will
be taking place along Hors-
fall Road, as well as in nearby
sand campsites and off-road
designated routes. Flaggers will
be posted to direct traffic and
drivers should anticipate tem-
porary delays.
This will be the second year
the Marine Reserves have visit-
ed the ODNRA in this unique
opportunity to conduct annual
training.

Matthews, Recreation Staff Of-
ficer for the ODNRA.
“This has been an outstand-
ing long-term partnership op-
portunity which benefits not
only the Marines but improves
access and enjoyment of public
lands for everyone.”
