Little from 1B surfi ng the ESPN sports chan-nels, I came across the World Championship Cornhole Tournament sponsored by the Amer- ican Cornhole League. I watched as the women and then the men battled for the championships in their respectful categories. Th ere are no diff erences in rules or distances or bean bag dimensions for male or fe- male competitors. Th ey did not televise the mixed pairs championship. Th e game resembles horseshoes in many com- ponents. Th e primary dif- Fishing ferences are the length of the throws, weight, por- tability of playing arena, safety and point scoring. Once I played and lost, I was determined to im- prove. It was an easy game to play and could be safely played by all. Last summer, my daughter, Alaura, and I built our own cornhole platforms. We have since then used them on several back-yard gatherings with our children and grand- children. When I was lucky enough to throw all four bags into the hole on one turn, my son told me to get a sharp- ie pen. He said it was to record my four-bagger on Boys and girls, ages 8-13, are invited to practice Hoop Shoots at the Flor- ence Boys and Girls Club, 1501 15th St., on Oct. 14, 21 and 28, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Florence Elk members will be there to guide, as- sist or answer any ques- tions on the annual free- throw contest taking place the back of the board. So, I wrote my name and date of my four-bagger. Later that same day, he recorded his own four-bagger. I am quite certain the back of his cornhole platform is fi lled with his name and dates. My grandson, Miles, also threw a four-bagger. Even though he was throwing from half the distance, he was four years old and we let him sign the board. Th is past summer, Cooper, my two-year-old grand-son, also threw a four-bagger — although his came from standing on the board and dropping them in! Th e game of cornhole can be as fun and competitive as Jan. 11 at Siuslaw Elemen- tary School. These practice opportu- nities will prepare shooters for the contest, with the top finishers in January’s competition ad-vancing to compete at the district lev- el in Tillamook. Finalists from that event advance to state and na- tional contests for awards. you and your family wants it to be. Th ere are regional, conference and national amateur and professional leagues around the coun- try. Next year, there is even going to be univer- sities competing against one another in cornhole. It is just a matter of time before colleges will be of- fering scholarships, similar to the online gaming schol- arships, to prodigy corn- hole players; in the world championships, there was a teenager on each of the fi nal two teams. Next summer why not try this safe and fun alter- native to horseshoes? harvesting, foraging, in- vasive plant species, mac- roinvertebrates and more. In addition, there will be raffles and prizes. The celebration will be held rain or shine, so dress appropriately for the out- doors. Following the celebra- tion, the Deadwood Com- munity Center will be hosting its 3rd Saturday Dance. Dinner will be available for purchase beginning at 6:30 p.m. and dancing starting at 7:30 p.m., with a bonfire. Get Results...List With Melody.
