10A | SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2019 | SIUSLAW NEWS S care -CROW H aunted M aze a real Freak Show Children’s Reperto- ry of Oregon Workshops (CROW) once again de- lights and dismays with the fifth annual Scare-CROW Haunted Maze Oct. 25, 26, 29, 30 and 31 at the CROW Center for the Performing Arts, 3120 Highway 101 in Florence. Last year’s “Quarantine” maze tied for first place for “Best Haunt in Oregon” by Oregon Haunted Houses. This year’s theme, “Freak Show” hearkens back to yes- teryear and carnivals, cir- cuses and freaks. Usually, when the carni- val comes to town, it’s time for fun and merry-making. But this time, something is different. Something just isn’t right about the per- formers. One by one, hu- manity has been drained from the traveling carnival troupe, until all that is left is utter darkness. They want YOU to join them in their macabre celebration under the tent. Will you enter the Freak Show to see what’s on display? And once you en- ter, will you ... stay? “Each year, the event gets bigger and scarier,” said Ringmaster Melanie Heard, artistic director of CROW. “We’re excited to let this out of the cage.” She took inspiration from iconic carnival imagery for this year’s show, and built on past favorites of the haunt- ed maze — creepy clowns, spookily talented youth and other special surprises. Plus, the community has stepped up in a big way to help with sets, makeup, spe- cialty props and all-around See Jim for your auto sales needs! Area residents Jeff and Terry from Angle and Square created an amazing vintage ticket booth for this year’s haunted maze. Each night will open the maze from 6 to 9 p.m. On Oct. 29, a special family hour will tone down the scary from 5 to 6 p.m. “This ‘less scary’ hour will still contain all of the same props and special effects, but there will be no jump scares and fewer, more ‘friendly’ wandering monsters,” Heard said. “This is a great time to come if you are a small child or a big chicken. Small chil- dren must be accompanied by an adult at all times.” Disclaimer: The maze it- self will still contain many scary visuals and props. The third annual Homecoming Gala will take place at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Florence Events Center. This year’s theme is “A Taste of Tuscany.” The goal is to raise $100,000 while providing attendees a mem- orable evening of fine din- ing, live music and enter- tainment, and live and silent auctions, as the community gathers to support the ongo- ing success of Boys and Girls Club as a vital organization. Tickets for the event are $75. Returning this year is in- ternational award-winning jazz/pop singer-songwriter Halie Loren. “This year’s theme is ‘A Taste of Tuscany,’ and I am all about it,” Loren wrote about the event. “Matthew Treder, Sean Peterson, Ryan Biesack and I are so excited to yet again be a part this fantastic event benefitting such a worthy cause!” The Homecoming Gala is the club’s largest, most im- pactful annual event.
