Senior discounts / Free estimates Award-wining Interna- tional broadcaster, journal- ist and author David Bar- samian, will be speaking in Florence at City Lights Cinemas on Sunday, Oct. 6. Since 1986, Barsamian has produced the one-hour “Alternative Radio” cur- rent affairs program series, which is carried on more than 180 U.S. stations as well as stations across Can- ada, Australia and Europe. He will speak in acknowl- edgement of local non- commercial community radio station, KXCR (90.7 FM), which is celebrating 5 years of locally- controlled broadcasting to the Oregon Coast. “Barsamian will address the increasing importance of independent media and offer his impressions of critical primary issues and views he feels are frequent- ly ignored or distorted in corporate media,” says Rand Dawson, a local sta- tion supporter. The free event will begin at 6:30 p.m. Donations to KXCR of $15 are encour- aged to maintain operation. No-host refreshments are available for station supporters or others start- ing at 6 p.m. “Seating is limited, so tickets are required and currently available at City Lights,” says Dawson. Barsamian is the winner of significant awards, in- cluding the Media Educa- tion Award and the ACLU’s Upton Sinclair Award for independent journalism. The Institute for Alterna- tive Journalism named him one of its Top 10 Media He- roes. He is author of several books, including “The Me- dia and US Foreign Policy” and “The Rise and Fall of Public Broadcasting.” Nora Kent, who will in- troduce Barsamian, says, “David provides his pro- gram worldwide at no cost to public radio stations. For this event, he has made a special trip from his production site in Boul- der, Colo., to support com- munity radio stations in Eugene, Florence and New- port.” According to Dawson, “David’s audiences recog- nize and respond to his in- formed views in enthusias- tic fashion. He records and interviews diverse U.S. and international authorities, authors and academicians commenting on current issues or trends of impor- tance. His content has such merit and biting detail that, for example, the Indian government has banned him from entering India.” KXCR (90.7 FM) offers the “Alternative Radio” program at 5 p.m. Friday evening, and streams it from the station website at kxcr.net. Local KXCR program schedules are available at the station, 1509 Ninth St., across from Siuslaw Public Library, kxcr.net or by call- ing 541-997-5252. Ribbon Cutting & Open House You’re Invited!
