PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
FACTS & STATS
In the U.S., prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-
skin cancer in men with 1 in 9 men being diagnosed with the disease
Approximately 174,650 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer
in 2019 in the U.S. - that is 1 every 3 minutes - a 6 percent increase
over 2018
In the U.S., prostate cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer death in
men
About 31,620 men will lose their lives to prostate cancer in 2019 in
the U.S. - that is 82 men every day - a 7 percent increase over 2018
Some men have a higher risk for developing prostate cancer:
o All men are at risk of developing prostate cancer, but the risk
increases significantly as men age

for developing prostate cancer

Korean wars and were exposed to Agent Orange are at a
higher risk for developing prostate cancer (and other cancers/
diseases)
Five-year survival rates are nearly 100 percent among men diagnosed
with localized or regional disease and about 30 percent when
diagnosed with metastatic disease
Screening for prostate cancer includes a PSA (prostate specific
antigen) blood test and a DRE (digital rectal exam); a biopsy is
required to diagnose prostate cancer
Nearly 3 million men in the U.S. are living following a prostate cancer
diagnosis
The disease is always treatable; but if detected early, prostate cancer
is often curable
Signs and Symptoms
Early-stage prostate cancer may not be associated with any obvious signs or
symptoms. Most cases of prostate cancer are detected by testing men who
have no signs or symptoms.
The signs and symptoms of advancing prostate cancer may include
Pelvic pain
