Holly Jolly Follies readies for auditions
Open auditions
for solo and spe-
cialty act slots in
this year’s Holly
Jolly Follies will
be held Saturday,
Oct. 5, from 2 to
5 p.m. at the Chil-
dren’s Repertory
of Oregon Work-
shops (CROW)
Center for the
Performing Arts,
3120 Highway 101 in Flor-
ence.
People should mark
their calendar and begin
working on the piece that
they would like to audi-
tion.
“Please show us the ex-
act piece you are proposing
for the show,” says CROW
Artistic Director Melanie
Heard. “It does not need
to be 100 percent finished,
but just enough to show us
what you have in mind.”
Available categories will
include: vocals, dances,
poetry, comedy, skits or
something that CROW is
not yet aware of, but has
always needed to add to
the show. The best length
for a finished piece is less
than 3.5 minutes.
People should bring
music on a device such as
an iPod, iPhone or MP3
player. An aux cord will
be provided to connect to
CROW’s Bluetooth speak-
er, but CROW suggests
bringing your own speak-
er, just in case. All audi-
tions must either have a
holiday theme or fit with-
in a holiday-themed show
and must be fami-
ly-friendly.
Those
who
don’t wish to be
a featured act or
soloist can still
participate. The
2019 Follies All-
Cast Meeting will
be held Monday,
Nov. 4, at 6:30
p.m. at CROW.
All are welcome
to participate in the en-
semble (group numbers),
and those who are new to
the stage are encouraged
to join the fun.
For more information,
email Melanie Heard at
crowtheatrekids@yahoo.
com. The Follies will be
performed Dec. 6 to 8 at
the Florence Events Cen-
ter.
Soroptimists prepare a ‘Harvest for Education’ for this year
Soroptimist Interna-
tional of Florence’s fourth
annual fundraiser will
take place Saturday, Oct.
19, beginning at 6 p.m. at
the Florence Events Cen-
ter, 715 Quince St. Dinner
will be served at 6:30 p.m.
and a no host bar will be
available.
This year’s theme is
“Harvest for Education,”
and people around the
community are encour-
aged to enter in a unique
pumpkin that will be auc-
tioned during the event.
“We chose this theme
because the name more
actually reflects the rea-
son behind the fundrais-
er,” said Soroptimist Kat
Rannow. “When I think
of harvest time, I think of
reaping the benefits of all
the hard work that went
into the crop. Harvest
time is celebrating the
good work. For the kids,
we are rewarding them
for their diligent studies,
academic excellence and
commitment to the com-
munity through service.”
During “Harvest for
Education,” Soroptimists
will hold a live auction,
silent auction, pump-
kin auction and dessert
auction. To donate an
item, sponsor a table or
purchase tickets for the
event, contact Cathy Di-
etz at 541-902-319 or
Frankie Jorgensen at 541-
999-8292.
Tickets for individuals
are $50, with sponsor-
ships available for full or
partial tables. Sponsor-
ship forms will be due
Friday, Sept. 20.
All pumpkin artwork
— carved, painted, papi-
er-mâché, etc. — are due
Friday, Sept. 27, to be
included in official mar-
keting of the event. The
completed pumpkins will
need to be delivered on or
before Friday, Oct. 18.
Proceeds from “Harvest
for Education” go to sup-
port scholarships for girls
and women in the Siuslaw
region, including gradu-
ating high school seniors
and women pursuing ed-
ucational opportunities.

Hear about unique eco-
system at library Sept. 26
Join David Moskowitz,
photographer and author
of the award-winning
book “Caribou Rainfor-
est: From Heartbreak to
Hope” and producer of
the film “Last Stand: The
Vanishing Caribou Rain-
forest,” at Siuslaw Public
Library for a night of im-
ages and stories from one
of the world’s most unique
terrestrial ecosystems.
The presentation will
take place on Thursday,
Sept. 26, beginning at
6 p.m. in the Bromley
Room at 1460 Ninth St.
Found in the north-
ern interior of the Pacific
Northwest, the Caribou
Rainforest is the only re-
maining inland temper-
ate rain forest on Planet
Earth and home to one of
the world’s most unique
ecotypes of caribou.
Moskowitz will focus
his presentation on the
efforts required to get
his photographs while
exploring the highlights,
challenges, ethics of doc-
umenting a vanishing
species in a remote rain
forest and the widely dif-
ferent human cultures
that call the region home.
Over four years, Mos-
kowitz has captured im-
ages and recorded vid-
eo in every season of
the year in the Caribou
Rainforest. From back
country ski expeditions
to multi-day canoe ex-
cursions, to camera trap-
ping in remote mountain
valleys, he sought ways to
capture the images that
would tell the both in-
spiring and heartbreak-
ing story of a vanishing
ecosystem.
Along the way, he has
joined researchers, log-
gers,
conservationists
and First Nations wildlife
stewards and activists.
