6A | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2019 | SIUSLAW NEWS Local phone book chooses art by Michael Wood for cover Pacific Publishing recent- ly selected a winning paint- ing for the cover of the 29th edition of Central Coast Connection. Florence’s lo- cally produced business di- rectory and phone book is being mailed this week to about 16,000 residents on the central coast. The painting was done by local and nationally-ac- claimed artist F. Michael (Mike) Wood and titled “Colorful Characters of the Waterfront.” Wood’s paint- ing was selected from a field of 30 entries from 15 artists in a contest coordinated by the Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA). Pacific Publishing in July issued a “Call to Artists” for artwork submissions that reflected the central coast locale (Yachats to Reed- sport and East to Dead- wood) for the cover of the 2020 Edition Central Coast Connection business direc- tory and phone book. Woods’ painting features a colorful rendering of the Old Town Florence river- side looking upriver. Wood received a cash prize of $500 for his winning entry. “We were thrilled with the number and qual- ity of entries,’’ said Jon Thompson, Central Coast Con-nection publisher. “We narrowed the competition to five finalists, all of which we thought had strong cov- er potential. We are always amazed at the level of talent in our community. And we appreciate the help and co- ordination we receive from FRAA.” Kristin Anderson, FRAA President, described the Local and nationally acclaimed artist Michael Wood (left), Pacific Publishing General Manager Patrick Looney and Sales Manager and co-owner Pam Thompson with the winning entry in Central Coast Connection cover contest. Oregon State Soci- ety DAR Project Patriot Chair Jacquie Beveridge said, “We have various toiletries, socks, snacks, etc., to send to those who are deployed to safeguard our freedom. “Members of our com- munity can help by stop- ping by to sign a card of thanks.” The chapter current- ly has enough money to send 10 boxes but would like to send at least 20. Each box costs $18.75. If community members want to donate, they can stop by Old Town Bar- bershop on Bay Street in Historic Old Town Flor- ence and drop a few coins in the container. The Love Box packing party will be on Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Blue Warehouse at 80 Harbor Street, just east of Bridgeport Market. “This community ef- fort will help let those who are away from home, protecting our freedom, know how much we ap- preciate their service,” Beveridge said.
