Book Review “Becoming Dr. Seuss” By Brian Jay Jones Dr. Seuss is a classic American icon. Whimsical and wonderful, his work has defined our childhoods and the child- hoods of our own children. The silly, sim- ple rhymes are a bottomless well of magic; his illustrations timeless favorites because, quite simply, they make us laugh. The Grinch, the Cat in the Hat, Horton and so many more are his troupe of beloved and uniquely Seussian creations. Theodor Geisel, however, had a second, more radical side. It is there that the al- lure and fascination of his Dr. Seuss alter ego begins. He had a successful career as an advertising man and then as a politi- cal cartoonist, his personal convictions appearing, not always subtly, through his books — remember the environmentalist in The Lorax? Geisel was a complicated man on an important mission. He introduced gen- erations to the wonders of reading while teaching young people about empathy and how to treat others well. Agonizing over word choices and rhymes, touching up drawings sometimes for years, he upheld a rigorous standard of perfection for his work. Geisel took his responsibility as a writer for children seriously, talking down to no reader, no matter how small. And with classics like “Green Eggs and Ham” and “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish,” Geisel de- lighted readers while they learned. Suddenly, reading became fun. Coming right on the heels of “George Lucas” and the bestselling “Jim Henson,” Brian Jay Jones is quickly developing a reputation as a master biographer of some of the world’s most creative geniuses of our time. 2019 Reading Challenge Continues We are now in the ninth month of the Siuslaw Reading Challenge. Are you par- ticipating? It’s a fun way to grow your reading interests. Read one book from each month’s theme, fill out an entry form for the monthly drawing and get your reading challenge card punched for the year end drawing. Even if you haven’t participated before, it’s never too late to start. You can go back and read books in all of the year’s previous themes, you just won’t be able to partic- ipate in those completed monthly draw- ings. September’s theme is Banned Books — read a book challenged or banned due to its subject matter or content. These books range from “The Adventures of Huckle- berry Finn” by Mark Twain, “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker, to “The Night Kitchen” by Maurice Sendak and “The Giver” by Lois Lowry. This month’s theme was selected be- cause each September we celebrate the freedom to read during Banned Books Week (this year from Sept. 22 to 28). We will have additional materials on display that last week of the month, in- cluding book lists and buttons celebrating the freedom to read. Computer Classes This Month This month’s second Open Tech Lab will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the library’s Bromley Room. Bring your own device or use one of ours to explore basic skills and get your techie questions answered. All experience levels of computer and device users are welcome.
