OBITUARIES
KAPLAN—Nate
Ka-
plan passed away unex-
pectedly Aug. 28, 2019, at
the age of 61.
Born in Palo Alto, Calif.
on April 18, 1958, to Bev-
erly and Donald Kaplan;
he spent his youth in Dan-
ville, Calif.
At age 12, Nate was
awarded a full scholarship
to University of The Pacif-
ic (UOP,
Stock-
t o n ,
Calif.),
where he
studied
music
( p r i -
marily

and percussion) and per-
formed with college music
instructors for a 6-week
program.
He spent his formative
years in the San Francisco
East Bay, where his interest
in jazz music blossomed,
following musicians such
as Carlos Santana, Tower
of Power, Flora Purim &
Airto, Jefferson Starship
and many others.
His skill level as a drum-
mer was so advanced that
as a freshman, he joined
the (all senior class) jazz
ensemble in high school.
Later in life, Nate raised
his two children as a single
parent in Humboldt Coun-
ty, Calif., and played music
whenever possible.
After moving to Flor-
ence in 2007 while work-
ing as an associate publish-
er for Blarney Publishing,
his talents were soon dis-
covered and he was play-
ing regularly in Florence,
particularly on Sunday
nights at Travelers Cove.
Over the years he played
several other venues all
over Oregon.
In 2009, he met Judy Ad-
ams and they joined forc-
es publishing the popular
tourism magazine, “101
Things To Do, Western &
Coastal Oregon.”
After living together
for seven years, they were
married in December
2017.
In 2016, they purchased
their dream home where
Nate set up a home record-
ing studio. Nate was a pas-
sionate musician and spent
much of his time compos-
ing music with fascinating
rhythms and melodies.
In 2017, he fulfilled a
lifelong dream by bringing
his percussion idol, world-
class artist Airto Moreira,
to Florence for a concert.
This allowed Nate the op-
portunity to make con-
nections with other world-
class musicians with whom
he collaborated on several
of his compositions.
His music can be found
on Spotify and other
streaming media.
He often donated his
time to local singers. Nate
founded the “Miles To Go”
jazz quartet in 2015. He
arranged concerts which
raised funds for the Siu-
slaw School District music
programs. He recorded the
quartet and all proceeds
from the CD sales also
went to the school’s music
programs.
Nate’s talents and energy
have touched many lives
and his passing leaves a
huge void in the hearts of
his family and friends. He
will be sorely missed.
Nate is survived by his
wife, Judy, son, Aaron,
daughter Tara, stepsons
Nathan (Carissa), Noah
(Catrina), Jonah, sister,
Lauren (Andre), broth-
er Paul (Kyoko), father
Donald (Sandra) and five
grandchildren.
His mother preceded
him in death.
A celebration of life will
be forthcoming. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be
made in Nate’s name to
the Siuslaw School District
music programs.

was born
in 1970 in Crescent City,
Calif., to Edward Ander-
son and Cheryl Anderson.
In 1994, Scott married Ai-
mee Summers. They have
two beautiful children
together: their daughter,
Faith, and son, Isaiah.
Scott earned his Bache-
lor’s degree in History with
a minor in Forestry from
Oregon State University in
1996, along with a Master
of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
July shooting suspect arrested
Gene
Joseph,
the
35-year-old suspect in a
shooting that occurred in
the Florence area on July
29, was located and ar-
rested Thursday night by
the Lane County Sheriff ’s
Office with the assistance
of the Florence Police
Department, the Oregon
State Police and the Tribal
Police.
Joseph had changed his
appearance significantly
and was reportedly hid-
ing in various locations in
the Florence area after the
shooting, including the
residence he was located
and arrested at Thursday
night.
Joseph was transported
to the Lane County Jail
and lodged on the follow-
ing charges: Assault in the
First Degree, Unlawful Use
of a Weapon, Felon in Pos-
session of a Weapon, and
Menacing.
He was scheduled to be
arraigned Friday (Sept. 6).

He was a beloved teach-
er and mentor to many
students during his 20-
year teaching career.
Scott valued education,
not only his own, but also
for his children and stu-
dents. He held a passion
for teaching and inspiring
young people. He particu-
larly loved western history
and found ways to weave
facts and education into
the stories he told.
Scott’s vivid imagina-
tion, energy and genuine
fondness of history facili-
tated a strong connection
with many students.
Scott was a prolific writ-
er of short stories and loved
to write. He was a dynamic
speaker and could light up
a room with his stories. He
also treasured the outdoors
and enjoyed hunting, fish-
ing, hiking and exploring
the wilderness in his free
time.
Scott is survived by his
father, Edward; his moth-
er, Cheryl; his wife, Aimee;
his two children: Faith and
Isaiah; his brother, Kris;
sister-in-law
Melialani;
and several aunts, uncles,
cousins, nieces, nephews
and in-laws.
A celebration of his life
is scheduled for Saturday,
Sept. 14, beginning at 2
p.m. at the Florence Events
Center.
