Each year, law enforce-
ment agencies through-
out Oregon (and the Na-
tion) carry the “Flame of
Hope” in support of the
Special Olympics and to
bring awareness to that
cause.
The event engages law
enforcement personnel to
champion the acceptance
and inclusion of those
with intellectual disabili-
ties, through athletic em-
powerment and participa-
tion.

Station Siuslaw River
crew members ran morew

Ore., through the city of
Florence, carrying the law
enforcement torch for this
leg of the relay.

For the three-mile trek

the crew was escorted by

The 21-mile run was
completed in two shifts,
with one group running
the portion from Gardiner
to Florence and a second
group running the final
three miles through town.
Two individuals, USCG
Chief Petty Officer Dan
Nielsen and USCG Boat-
swain’s Mate Third Class
Kyle Sheehan, completed
the entire 21 miles.
Chief Nielsen, who or-
ganized local Coast Guard
personnel to participate,
indicated that three new
Station Siuslaw River
members also participated
in the event.
“This illustrates how
our new members made
an admirable effort to in-
tegrate into the station
team,” said Nielson.
