2B | SATURDAY, AUGUST 31, 2019 | SIUSLAW NEWS Horse Club begins again at C&M Stables for local youth C&M Stables will again offer Horse Club to area boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 18 during the 2019-20 school year. Horse Club sessions are held after school, with spe- cific class days and times dependent upon the num- ber of students that partic- ipate. Through this program, children learn about the day-to-day chores that take place to have a horse and be able to ride. Their inter- action with the horses also enables them to gain con- fidence as their skills and abilities increase over time. There are occasional mini trail rides planned as students get to a safe riding level, as well as a trail ride that includes parents at the end of the session. Sign-ups are being ac- cepted now for the first ses- sion, which begins Sept. 15. For more information or to sign up for Horse Club, stop by C&M Stables be- tween 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., seven days a week. C&M Stables was es- tablished in 1981 by Jeff Chastain, a Florence native, and is located just 8 miles north of Florence at 90241 Highway 101. For more information, call the stables at 541-997- 7540. C&M Stables also offers beach, dune and trail rides, as well as an Adult Riding Club. Anyone gathering mat- Sailors from 1B Though Mapleton got off the first point of the set, it was short lived as Bobcats senior Madison Brown took position to serve, doling out a 6-point streak that left the Sailors scrambling. Callouts were rare as the Sailors seemed timid in communicating who was going for the ball. The situation didn’t improve throughout the short set, which saw the Sailors los- ing 8-25. Communication improved incrementally in the second and third sets, with losses of 11-25 and 10-25, respectively, but the Bobcats were too much to handle, taking the match in three straight sets, 3-0. Dooley pointed out dominating Myrtle Point wasn’t the strategy for their first game. “It was testing out how each person plays with each other and if this is a good starting lineup,” she said. “Getting it worked out before the actual sea- son starts.” The strategy seemed to pay off when it came time for the Sailors to go up Little from 1B School faculty room and any person wishing to put their skill in selecting the winning team could play. Aft er the regular season ends, the person selecting the most winners won a percentage of the pot. Th is was similar to the Siuslaw News “Football Picker’s Panel” contest to select winners of football games each week in the paper — a tradition dating back more than two decades. In my early years at Siu- slaw High School, I met with several friends and coaches each Monday night to select our winners for the next week of NFL games. We had an extra side fund for any team scoring 33 points and win- ning. Th is form of skill in selecting winning football teams was common across America. In the 1990s, my son Brandon correctly picked the most football game winners one week. His name, along with the other weekly winners, was placed in a drawing for tickets to the Oregon vs Oregon State football game. He won. Brandon and I sat in the middle of the Oregon State fans section at Aut- zen Stadium and wore the Oregon Ducks’ colors. We cheered for the Ducks. One hundred permits will be available for sale at $250 a permit. One permit per person. Permits will be sold on a first come, first served basis. To purchase a permit, the following information must be provided: • Valid identification card issued by a state or against Falls City. Mapleton took a strong lead in the first set, with Jensen serving up a 5-point series that ended with an ace. The Mountaineers rebounded with a 5-point run of their own and, after a few tense volleys, climbed ahead. Three quarters in, the score was 8-22 — but the Sailors refused to give up, rally- ing when freshman Kiana Moody served an ace that sparked a 4-point rally. Though the Sailors eventually lost the first set 13-25, they were far from defeated, coming back in the second set with even more commu- nication and longer vol- leys — one of which last- ed nearly two full min- utes and causing the crowd to go wild. Even though the Sailors lost the point, the effort put forth was infectious for fans. “That was insane,” Dooley said. “I mean, you know, a few of those didn’t go our way, but just how they didn’t give up on those is exactly what you want to see as a coach.” Mapleton lost the sec- ond set 19-25, and the high score seemed to bol- ster the team’s confidence as set three became a tight race — with the Sailors staying within 3 points for the majority of the set. Mapleton trailed by just 1 point, 17-18, when a series of errors from the Sailors, along with some timely aces from Falls City, translated into a 7-point run for the Mountaineers. Though the Sailors were able to pull off a kill at the last minute, Falls City took the win, 25-18. While the Sailors may have lost both games, the improvements from the first sets to the last were enormous, said Dooley, who added that the foun- dation of the team is sound. And when daily practices begin, the team could see its fortunes turn around quickly. “I’m really excited for the season to get started,” Dooley said. “And today was just a great indicator of where we’re going to go from here.” their selected teams. Th ere are no off ensive linemen, yet these players are re- sponsible for the success or failure of their chosen players. Fantasy play- ers can even play against themselves as the players can come from many dif- ferent NFL teams. Mil- lions of dollars may have been won or lost when Todd Gurley of the Los Angeles Rams decided to not score in the late stages of a game last season. Th e Rams were in control late and Gurley elected to stop inside the fi ve-yard line so the team could run out the clock. Fantasy team captains were either screaming at the decision or cheering for Gurley — it all depend- ed on points he scored as an individual not for the Rams. If you are wondering whether or not fantasy teams get to the Super Bowl, then wonder no more. Th is season, the NFL offi cial fantasy league will have a Super Bowl. Since I do not play fanta- sy football, I have no idea how fantasy teams will be selected for the fantasy Super Bowl. Now since selecting winners of sports contests have been judged to be a skill rather than chance, the number of playing has grown. Even if you select win- ners because of their school colors, mascots or city, it is still considered skill and not luck.
