There was a time when the death of a Whitby would have made national news, but when the family patriarch, Roger, dies, he is alone. Word of his death travels from the long-suffering family lawyer to Rog- er’s clan of children (from four differ- ent marriages), and the outlook isn’t good. Roger has left everything to his 21-year-old son Nick, a Whitby only in name — and Nick is nowhere to be found. Brooke, an older daughter who is both overwhelmingly nostalgic and unexpectedly pregnant, leads the search for Nick, hoping to convince him to let her keep her Boston home. Shelley, the only child from the third marriage, hasn’t told anyone that she’s dropped out of college just months before graduation and is currently working as an amanuensis for a blind architect, with whom she crosses com- plicated boundaries. And when Nick, on the run from the law after a misguided act of politi- cal activism, finally appears at Shelley’s New York home, worlds collide and explode in spectacular fashion. Soon, the three siblings are faced with the question they have been running from their whole lives: What do they want their future to look like, if they can fi- nally escape their past? Weaving together multiple perspec- tives to create a portrait of the Amer- ican dream gone awry, “Baby of the Family” is a vivid, absorbing debut about family secrets and how they de- fine us, bind us together, and threaten to blow us apart. senting “Under A Starry Sky — Tales of the Moon, the Sun and the Stars,” in which the audience will explore the great beyond through the ancient art of storytelling. Together through active listening and imaging the attendees will co-cre- ate stories of the cosmos, of the shining and infinite big beyond. This program is free and open to the general public and will run about an hour. Ruth Davis: Heart Sparks Workshop On Thursday, Sept. 5, from 1 to 3 p.m., author Ruth Davis will be lead- ing a workshop entitled “Heart Sparks: 7 Practices for Loving Your Life.” With all of the expectations, obli- gations, and busyness in our lives, it’s easy to forget that, as humans, we also need to feel ease and joy. Join Davis for some fun and interactive exercises and practices to help cope with and rise above the challenges of daily life. She is an author, speaker, and per- sonal coach, helping people find more joy and meaning in their lives. Her workshops and retreats combine prac- tical coaching techniques with creativ- ity and play, to spark her clients’ deep- est passions, resistances, and dreams. While this program is free to the general public, preregistration is re- quired, as only 15 participants can be accommodated. This program takes over the field trip se- ries that Jim Grano began as a teacher. In September, ECO is having its annual fundrais- er and there is a chance for people all across Oregon to participate through a raffle. On Sunday, Sept. 8, ECO is hosting the third annu- al Garden Party, its largest fundraising event of the year. It takes place in Port- land, but funds raised will be used to support pro- gramming both in Portland metro area and in Lane County. This year, ECO received a donation of a Burley bike trailer and jogger attach- ment kit worth over $1,000. ECO plans to raffle off the item to the public using so- cial media platforms and live-stream the drawing at the event, so that ticket holders have a chance to win the prize even if they can’t attend the event in person. Raffle tickets are $5 each, $20 for five tickets, $50 for 15 tickets and $100 for 75 tickets. “The raffle prize was donated by Burley, a Eu- gene-based company that designs high quality bike accessories,” said Amelia Remington, ECO’s Lane County and Coast Pro- gram Manager. “There will be a second-place prize of a pair of Keen shoes (a Portland-based shoe com- pany).” Raffle tickets are on sale until 5 p.m. on Sept. 6. Winners will be announced at the Garden Party on Sept. 8. To watch the raffle draw- ing live, follow and tune in to @ecology4kids on Insta- gram or on Facebook.com/ ecology4kids.
