Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge in Our Community. From Laila Lalami, the Pu- litzer Prize finalist and author of “The Moor’s Account,” here is a timely, powerful novel about the suspicious death of a Moroccan immigrant — at once a family saga, a murder mystery and a love story, in- formed by the treacherous fault lines of American cul- ture. Late one spring night, Driss Guerraoui, a Moroccan im- migrant living in California, is walking across a darkened intersection when he is killed by a speeding car. The repercussions of his death bring together a di- verse cast of characters: Guer- raoui’s daughter Nora, a jazz composer who returns to the small town in the Mojave she thought she’d left for good; his widow, Maryam, who still pines after her life in the old country; Efrain, an undocu- mented witness whose fear of deportation prevents him from coming forward; Jeremy, an old friend of Nora’s and an Iraq War veteran; Coleman, a detective who is slowly dis- covering her son’s secrets; An- derson, a neighbor trying to reconnect with his family; and the murdered man himself. Community lunch this Friday Thank You. Book Review “The Other Americans” by Laila Lalami www.edwardjones.com Member SIPC The Florence Senior Center is hosting a lunch fundraiser for the community on Friday, Aug. 16, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Florence Senior Center, 1570 Kingwood St. All ages are welcome and tickets are $5. There will be soup, ham- burgers, potato salad, deviled eggs, watermelon, pie, ice- cream sundaes and soda or coffee. Call 541-997-8844 for reser- vations in advance. As the characters — deep- ly divided by race, religion and class — tell their stories, connections among them emerge, even as Driss’s family confronts its secrets, a town faces its hypocrisies and love, messy, and unpredictable, is born. Lane County Cultural Coalition Grant Workshop Don’t forget that tomorrow, Aug. 15, the Lane County Cultural Coalition (LCCC) will be offering a free grant workshop at 10:30 a.m. in the library’s Bromley Room. LCCC awards grants in four categories and are intended to fund arts, heritage, history, preservation and humanities programs. Unlike many grant programs, applicants to a LCCC grant are not required to be a 501(c)(3) organization but can also be an individual. The grants are for proj- ect activities that protect and stabilize Oregon’s cultural re- sources; expand public aware- ness of, access to, and par- ticipation in quality cultural experiences in Oregon; ensure that Oregon cultural resourc- es are strong and dynamic contributors to Oregon’s com- munities and quality of life; and build an understanding of the value and impact of cul- ture to Oregonians. Tracy Chipman: Storyteller On Thursday, Aug. 22, at 6 p.m., the library is pleased to host Wisconsin-based sto- ryteller Tracy Chipman. This program is free and open to the general public. In her program “Under A Starry Sky — Tales of the Moon, the Sun and the Stars,” the audience will explore the great beyond through the ancient art of storytelling. Together through active lis- tening and imaging, the at- tendees will co-create stories of the cosmos, of the shining and infinite big beyond. Chipman describes herself as “a lover of beginnings, mid- dles, and ends, a listener, a sto- ry carrier, folklorist and teller of tales.” Her ancestors, pioneers, Puritans and travelers, carried stories from the Bavarian for- ests to the Great Lakes and the rolling prairies. Mapleton Branch The Mapleton library is located at 88148 Riverview Avenue, in the Lion’s Club Building. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. The library has books, magazines, DVDs and vid- eos, recorded books, internet computers, wireless internet access and more. Rose & Crown offers ‘Herbal Medicine in the Garden’ class Join the fun on Sunday, Aug. 18, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., as Rose and Crown Apothecary engages the senses to explore the unique qualities of herbs and their effects on people, known as organoleptics. Enjoy a stroll through Rose and Crown’s lakeside garden and learn about easy-to-grow medicinal herbs. Attendees will collect herbs and make an “in- stant tincture” via CO2 extraction. Everyone will take home a 1 oz. dropper bottle of the one-of-a-kind tincture prepared together with the class. This is a fun, hands- on method to experience the medicinal qualities of herbs. Whether you are newly interested in herbal medi- cine or an advanced herb- alist, this interactive class will help you grow your connection to the healing power of nature. The class will be held at a Siltcoos Lake location; directions will be given upon registration. The cost is $30 and includes a 1 oz. tincture.
