HOSA joins Lane Blood
Works for blood drive
Siuslaw High School’s
HOSA Chapter is working
with Lane Blood Works to
host a community blood
drive on Wednesday, Aug.
14.
The event will take place
at Siuslaw High School,
2975 Oak St., from 7:30
a.m. to 3 p.m. on the sec-
ond day of high school stu-
dent registration.
All blood donated stays
in Lane County.
Community members
can walk in without an
appointment. The Siuslaw
HOSA chapter will receive
Fresh catch
$500 for every 25 people
who donate.
Hannah Waller, treasur-
er for Siuslaw HOSA, said
the money from the event
goes to registration for
competitions, equipment
needed by the chapter and
travel fare for the students.
HOSA Future Health
Professionals is a student
organization that seeks to
empower students to be-
come leaders in the global
health community.

anglers have been catching their limit of crab and salmon in the Siuslaw River recently and, a few
miles away in the Pacific Ocean, tuna is being found in good numbers.

Peace Harbor to begin offering
monthly childbirth, newborn class
The Women’s Services
team at PeaceHealth Peace
Harbor Medical Center has
launched a new monthly
Childbirth and Newborn
Care Class for expectant
parents.
The daylong class is held
the second Saturday of the
month, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
in Conference Room D at
Peace Harbor, 400 Ninth St.
This month’s meeting is
today, Aug. 10.
This class is intended to
help expectant parents pre-
pare for one of life’s most
rewarding yet challenging
experiences — the birth of
a baby.
Taught by Peace Harbor
labor and delivery nurses,
the class covers all aspects
of childbirth, as well as lac-
tation and caring for your
newborn.
Lunch and a tour of the
delivery unit are included.
All expectant parents are
encouraged to attend —
both those who are having
their first child, and those
who want a refresher. Par-
ticipants should dress com-
fortably and bring one or
two pillows, as well as their
partners or labor support-
ers.
Registration is required
as class size is limited, so
call 541-897-9048 to regis-
ter.
Volunteers needed for DA’s Victim Services program
The Lane County Dis-
trict Attorney’s Office
needs new volunteers to
help support its Victim
Services Division.
Volunteers serve as vic-
tim advocates and work
with people who have been
victims of crimes being
prosecuted by the District
Attorney’s Office.
“This is an incredibly re-
warding place to volunteer,”
said Lori Silano, director
of Victim Services. “Many
of our volunteers stay year
after year because of the
powerful connections they
make with one another and
clients as they work to help
victims of crime under-
stand their rights and par-
ticipate in the legal system.”
Volunteers will be select-
ed through an application
and interview process.
Eligible
individuals
must be at least 18 years
of age, able to pass a com-
plete criminal background
check, and be willing to
commit eight hours per
week for a one-year period.
Hours are between 8
a.m. and noon, Monday
through Friday. Applicants
are not required to have
knowledge of, or experi-
ence in, legal or counseling
services.
Successful volunteers are
