We want to include everyone,” she said. “Thanks to our partnerships and relationship with the community, 2018 truly went off without a hitch and 2019 will be another success.” NNO, a program of National Association of Town Watch, is an annual community-build- ing campaign to promote law enforcement-community partnerships and neighbor- hood camaraderie. This helps make neighborhoods a safer and more caring place to live. NNO enhances the relation- ship between neighbors and law enforcement while bring- ing back a true sense of com- munity. It provides a great op- portunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. Millions of neighbors across thousands of communities Show your appreciation to law enforcement community P olice offi cers put their lives on the line every day they show up for work. But in spite of the sacrifi ces of- fi cers routinely make, their contribu- tions often go unnoticed. Police offi cers’ jobs might be thank- less, but that does not mean people cannot express their gratitude to the men and women in blue who keep their communities safe. The following are a handful of ways to show support for the police offi cers who work hard to protect and serve your community. • Support police fundraisers. Police departments fundraisers support various causes. Some might aim to raise funds for sports programs de- signed to help local youth, while oth- ers might hope to raise money for the families of fallen offi cers. Whatever the motivation for the fundraiser, by supporting the event you are donat- ing to a good cause and showing the police they and their eff orts are being supported. • Teach kids to respect police offi - cers. Police offi cers have come under considerable scrutiny in recent years, and youngsters may not know how to respond to news stories that do not paint police offi cers in a positive light. Parents can show their support for police offi cers by teaching their kids to respect police. Encourage children to come to you if they read or hear stories so you can help them process the news and think critically. • Obey the law. One of the best ways to show respect for law enforcement offi cers is to obey the law. Should you be called out for an infraction, treat the offi cer or agent politely and com- ply with his or her requests. • Share a positive story. Use social media or your networking connec- tions to share a story of how law en- forcement helped you or did some- thing worth noting. • Pick up a police offi cer’s tab. Police offi cers work in your community and, therefore, they likely break bread in your community as well. When you see police offi cers ordering meals at a local restaurant or sitting down to lunch at a neighborhood diner, of- fer to pay for their meals or arrange payment with their waiter or waitress without letting the police offi cers know. However, keep in mind that some departments may not allow their offi cers to accept these gestures, so always ask fi rst. • Thank a police offi cer when giv- en the opportunity. Though it seems simple, saying “Thank you” to police offi cers can reassure them that the communities they work so hard to protect support and appreciate their eff orts. Thanking police offi cers may only take a few seconds, but such a gesture can help police offi cers better cope with the stress of their jobs. Police offi cers have diffi cult jobs that require them to make consider- able sacrifi ces to protect the commu- nities where they work. But it doesn’t take much to show your support for local police offi cers and express your gratitude for the sacrifi ces they make every day. — Metro Creative Connection N ATIONAL N IGHT O UT Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019 6 to 9 p.m. Miller Park, 1651 18th St. Community members of all ages are welcome to join the Florence Police Department for National Night Out at Miller Park.
