Dodson retired from

As qualifi ed as these

Th e selection of Sam

Viking player-to-Viking

Coach Johnson may

John, would run dry foot-
balls to the offi cials during
home football games.
Th is early and close
proximity to Coach Dod-
son and his staff could only
have contributed to his
game day knowledge about
the intensity and eff orts
given by those coaches.
Our Coach Johnson also
comes from a family of
football coaches. Adding to
the experience of his father
as a coach are two uncles.
Th ey each happen to have
been in charge of the 6A
Sheldon Irish, with each
winning at least one state
championship.
Coach Johnson’s dad
remarked to me a quote
from his son about Flor-
ence when he said, “Oak
Street for Life.” Th is refers
to the entire educational
and sports arenas, which
are located on Oak Street.
Coach Johnson was edu-
cated there, played his ath-
letics there — and now he
will be coaching and teach-
ing on Oak Street.
Th ere are challenges
ahead to be sure. Th e Vi-
kings are heading into
another season with their
fourth coach in fi ve years;
this comes aft er having just
two coaches in the previ-
ous 45 years with Lutero
and Dodson.
Also, the student body
is smaller. And the league
they are competing in
at the 3A level is one of
the toughest in the state.
Th e players need to know
Coach Johnson and his
staff will work tirelessly to
instill Viking Pride. It is a
pride that comes from be-
ing the hardest working
football team in the state,
at any level.
Th ey will make Hans
Petersen fi eld once again
the place to be on Friday
nights.
We, the community of
Florence, need to help our
team by attending and
making noise in support of
their eff orts on the fi eld.
Winning is not the only
objective. Rather, it is cre-
ating a competitive spirit
from the opening kick-off
until the time runs out.
We want our players and
coaches to know we appre-
ciate the time and com-
mitment they give in their
eff orts to be successful on
and off the fi eld.
Coach Johnson was
one of the smallest play-
ers on the fi eld when he
played. He was a receiver
on off ense and a safety on
defense. He, and his team-
mates, demonstrated to all
that “It is not the size of the
team on the fi eld, it is the
fi ght of the players on that
team.”
I urge all of you to attend
games this year as Coach
Johnson brings back the
Viking spirit.

councils, soil and water
conservation districts, land
trusts, landowners and
local communities plant
trees, replace culverts with
bridges, and restore estu-
aries and natural stream-

water quali-ty and reduces
flood risk for local com-
munities. Irrigators use the
program to reduce their
water use, which can also
re-duce their energy costs
while putting more water
back in streams for fish.
