FEATURED HOME OF THE WEEK COURTESY PHOTO CROW School of Wizardry Mysticism and Theatrical Arts students are preparing for a special showcase, open and free to the public, set for this Friday at the CROW Center for the Performing Arts. I t’s day seven of CROW’s second summer camp, entitled The C.R.O.W. School of Wizardry, Mysti- cism, and Theatrical Arts, and participants can feel the excitement in the air. As the title of the camp suggests, campers have been immersed in a fun and imaginative curricu- lum centering around the theme of magic, spells, po- tions and creativity. But it’s not all fun and fri- volity. Campers have been learning about the craft of theater through a va- riety of carefully selected games and exercises. On this morning, for example, students worked on pan- tomime actions, character development, body posi- tioning, improvisation and realistic reactions to a situ- ation. They have created a “good wizard” and an “evil wizard,” and are becoming experts at physicality and vocalization. They are also pros at a made-up game called “Elephant Quid- ditch.” “CROW summer camps are definitely a lot of fun, but they teach much more than how to play make-be- lieve.” says CROW Artistic Director Melanie Heard, who also happens to be a credentialed teacher with a master’s degree in ed- ucation. “Our kids learn teamwork, commitment, self-confidence and dedi- cation. They get to use their minds in new and exciting ways and this is one of the few places where being ‘weird’ is not only allowed, but celebrated!” The summer camp di- rectorial team is made up of Heard and her “awesome partner in crime,” Gene- vieve Meltzer. The duo works hard to create an environment where the kids are actively engaged and their unique talents are respected. Spe- cial Guest Wizards have visited to share tips and tricks about the arts world, including Jason Wood, Ma- ree Beers, Tamara Szalews- ki and, later this week, Misti Soper and Diane David. Soper works backstage on many of the large scale events at the Hult Center in Eugene, and David is from Southern California, where she works in the profes- sional theater scene. Students will be working on paper marbling their own “Wizard Scrolls” with David later this week. The Free End of Camp Showcase will take place Friday, Aug. 2, at 3 p.m. at The CROW Center for the Performing Arts — 3120 Hwy 101 in Florence. Doors will open at 2:30 PM and seating is limited to first come, first served. The general public is wel- come to attend. For more information, program, please visit www. crowkids.com.
