OBITUARIES
CALDWELL —Elsie
M. Miles Caldwell, 88, of
Florence, passed peaceful-
ly into the arms of Jesus on
July 14, 2019, in Coos Bay.
Elsie was born April 2,
1931, in Eugene and has
lived in
the Flor-
ence area
for most
of her life.
S h e
loved her
church
and the
Siuslaw
Elsie
Pioneer
Caldwell
Museum,
for which
she was very active.
She also loved the Friday
Night Hymn Sing, making
quilts, writing and truly
loved her family history.
She touched many lives,
whether it was through
working in real estate
for the past 32 years (the
last 13 with TR Hunter),
through her many activi-
ties or her famous pies that
people enjoyed.
Elsie will be truly missed.
Survivors include her
husband, Seth Caldwell;
and her children: Michael
Libby, Twila Steiner and
Barbara Johnson.
She was preceded in
death by her daughter Julia.
She is also survived
by many grandchildren,
great-grandchildren and
many other relatives and
close friends.
A memorial celebration
of Elsie’s life will be held
on Saturday, Aug. 3, at
the Florence First Baptist
Church at 1 p.m.

el Florence Funeral Home
was in charge of arrange-
ments.
L aTOMME—Andrew
John LaTomme, Jr., 89, of
Florence, past away July 18,
2019.
Andy was born Jan. 9,
1920, in Patterson, N.J.
He
delivered
milk
throughout Bergen Coun-
ty, N.J., in the days of back
porch boxes, glass bottles
and motor truck routes.
During WWII, he served
in the U.S. Army Air Corps
as a staff sergeant and C-47
crew chief who was award-
ed the Good Conduct
Medal.
After the war he worked
as a machinist for Uniroyal,
Inc’s research and develop-
ment section in New Jersey
and in Connecticut.
Andy served as a volun-
teer fireman and officer in
the Waldwick, N.J., Volun-
teer Fire Department from
1951 to 1972. He was an ac-
tive member of the Wald-
wick Methodist Church
and later the Presbyteri-
an Church of the Siuslaw,
where he was recognized as
an Honorary Life Member
of the Presbyterian Women
for his assistance to them.
A life-long supporter of
youth, Andy served as a lit-
tle league coach and was an
enthusiastic fan of Wald-
wick Jr-Sr High School
football and wrestling. He
gave over 30 years of ser-
vice to the Boy Scouts of
America as an Assistant
Scoutmaster, Roundtable
Commissioner and district
and council trainer.
He also served on the
staff of several Wood
Badge training courses. For
his dedication to Scouting,
he was awarded the Broth-
erhood Honor of the Order
of the Arrow and the Silver
Beaver Award for distin-
guished service to youth.
In 1990, Andy was in-
ducted into the Benevolent
and Protective Order of
Elks, Lodge #1858, Flor-
ence, Ore. He was known
for his cheerful and faithful
service in a variety of lodge
programs and to the Ladies
of Elks. His lodge brothers
will fondly remember him
for his prowess at the pool
table and for making the
motion that “all the bills be
paid” during their weekly
meetings.
In 2000, Lodge #1858
named him their Elk of the
Year.
Andy was also well-
known as a woodcarver,
agate polisher, counted
cross-stitch artist, and a pi-
nochle and cribbage player
extraordinaire.
An article detailing his
making and giving away
over 3,400 wooden Celtic
cross necklaces appeared in
the July-August 2019 edi-
tion of Presbyterians Today
magazine.
He was the husband of
Alice Irene Giese for 62
years; father of Andrew
John LaTomme, III (Susan
Gehring); grandfather of
Matthew John LaTomme
(Suzanne Day), Andrew
Ryan LaTomme, David
Jeffrey LaTomme (Sherie
Call) and Amy Christine
LaTomme;
great-grand-
father of Hannah, Colin,
Zachary, Jaden, Andrew
John IV, Korbin, Tobias,
Skyler and Allicyn; and
brother of Elizabeth Leddy.
He was preceded in death
by his parents (Andrew, Sr.
and Catherine), his wife,
two sisters (Mary Schultz
and Catherine Ahl), and a
grandson (Andrew Ryan).
A celebration of his life
will be held Tuesday, Au. 6,
at 11 a.m., at the Presbyte-
rian Church of the Siuslaw,
3996 Highway 101.
