New president elected at the Florence
Garden Club’s 70-year anniversary meeting
At the June meeting of the Florence
Garden Club, members celebrated the
club’s 70-year anniversary, accepted the
retirement of President Karen Childs and
voted in a new president, Phyllis Beau-
champ.
Having the difficult task of following
a predecessor who held the office for 15
years, Childs served as club president
from 2015 to 2019. Among the projects
she initiated are installing a website with
how-to videos, introducing new monthly
educational topics, expanding scholar-
ships to include LCC students and identi-
fying new fundraising opportunities.
Incoming president Beauchamp served
as vice-president from 2018-19 and has
been a gardener most of her life. Her gar-
dening education was handed down to
her from her grandparents. Being a new-

public is free to attend the educational

ited. For example, if a con-
tract is more than $10,000,
approval will have to be
obtained by both SVFR and
WLAD, which will contin-
ue to remain separate tax-
ing agencies with their own
boards.
WLFEA will primari-
ly employ administrative
staff, including Office Man-
ager Dina McClure, three
administrative
assistants
and five coordinated ser-
vices team members.
It would also officially
have hiring and firing au-
thority on Fire and EMS

SVFR Operations Chief

Dickerson
and
WLAD Operations Chief
Matt House.
The new agency would
not collect additional tax
dollars from the public,
instead being funded by
SVFR and WLAD.
“The Contracting Parties
agree that, during the first
year of the Authority’s ex-
istence, WLAD shall pay 51
percent of the Authority’s
costs and SVFR shall pay
49 percent,” the agreement
read. The one percent dis-
crepancy exists because the
WLFEA will be housed in
SVFRs main building, lo-
cated at 2625 Highway 101.
The one percent will pay for
the use of the copier, elec-
tricity and other adminis-
trative needs that will arise
from the new organization.

governmental Agreement

licly on Thursday, July 25,

Wednesday night’s meet-
ing, five newly elected
board members were sworn
into their positions.
For WLAD, incumbent
Cindy Russell and new
board member John Mur-
phey were sworn in. The
board voted unanimous-
ly to keep Rick Yecny as
WLAD’s board president,
and elected Larry Farn-
sworth as vice president.
“My plan is to serve this
one more year, and hope-
fully we’ll continue to bring
on new people to take the

lead role,” Yecny said.
For SVFR, new board
members Sam Spayd and
James Palisi took the oath
of office, as did Alan Burns,
who took over for former
board member Woody
Woodbury earlier in the
year.
“Thank you for all your
years of service, it was very
much appreciated,” Farn-
sworth told Woodbury, who
was sitting in the audience.
“Thank you, I enjoyed it,”
Woodbury said.
Ron Green nominat-
ed Ned Hickson to be the
board president of SVFR,
and the board unanimously
voted in approval.
Hickson then nominated
Greene for vice president,
saying, “Ron’s done a great
job, and I’ve learned a lot
watching him. I’m extreme-
ly excited about this partic-
ular board, and the level of
experience we have.”
FUUF explores personal
health plans with doctor
Sunday, July 21, from 10
to 11 a.m., Dr. Dean Schrock
will deliver a message titled,
“Creating Your Personal
Health Plan” at the Florence
Unitarian Universalist Fel-
lowship.
Schrock shares, “The cre-
ating starts with determin-
ing who you are and what
makes your heart sing. This
becomes a prescription for
conducting your life and is
an important part of taking
control of your health.”
The fellowship is locat-
ed at 87738 Highway 101 at
Heceta Beach Road and is
wheelchair accessible. Each
service concludes with re-
freshments and a dialogue
circle to explore the ques-
tions that come up during
each worship service.

Spirituali-Tea group invites

p.m. at the Florence Senior

will present a musical devo-
tional and sing-along.
Among the guests are
Dan and Kris Reed, long-
time residents of Alaska,
who have purchased the
property where the Flor-
ence Farmer’s Market is
held each Tuesday. In the
future they plan to develop
the property, but for now
are happy to provide this
service to the community.
The Reeds will be in Flor-
ence with some 20 fami-
ly members and will have
songbooks, musical instru-
ments and a joyful spirit to
share.
All are welcome, and
there is no charge or request
for donations. Refresh-
ments will be served.
August VBS invites kids to join
Florence Christian Church

vites local children to ROAR
Vacation Bible School.
The VBS runs from Aug.
5 through 9 from 9 a.m. to
noon daily for children four
years old through grade five.
Kids will participate in
memorable Bible adven-
tures, games and hands-on

challenged to collect canned
food and pocket change to
help support Florence Food
