21, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. for
“Art & Alchemy-Preserving
Summer into Cloth.”
This make-and-take
workshop will show how to
make a lasting memory of
flowers and leaves by trans-
ferring them onto fabric. The
hands-on class will include
plant mandala transferring
onto
specially-prepared
drawstring backpacks and
creating colorful bandanas
using plant-made dyes.
This is a great activity
for kids and adults. Partici-
pants will be surrounded by
medicinal herbs and forest
while tapping into their cre-
ativity.
With this make n’ take,
people will create three
unique items: a bandana
dyed with the botanicals of
their choice, a cotton draw-
string bag and a second ban-
featuring each person’s one-
of-a-kind mandala print.
Attendees can also en-
joy the garden and discover
easy-to-grow plants for cre-
ating botanical creations at
home.
“I’m sure there will be
impromptu herb walks that
will engage the senses and
spark sharing of herbal
medicine and lore. We are
inspired to connect people
of all ages with the healing
power of nature,” said Patri-
cia Immel, owner of Rose &
Crown.
This event will be held at
a Siltcoos Lake location; di-
rections will be given upon
registration. Refreshments
will also be provided.
The cost is $40 or two for

“The British Are Coming”

In June 1773, King George
III attended a grand cele-
bration of his reign over the
greatest, richest empire since
ancient Rome. Less than two
years later, Britain’s bright fu-
ture turned dark: after a series
of provocations, the king’s sol-
diers took up arms against his
rebellious colonies in America.
The war would last eight years,
and though at least one in 10
of the Americans who fought
for independence would die
for that cause, the prize was
valuable beyond measure:
freedom from oppression and
the creation of a new republic.
Rick Atkinson, author of the
Pulitzer-winning “An Army at
Dawn” and two other books
about World War II, has long
been admired for his unpar-
alleled ability to write deeply
researched, stunningly viv-
id narrative history. Now he
turns his attention to a new
war, and in the initial volume
of the Revolution Trilogy he
tells the story of the first 21
months of America’s violent
effort to forge a new nation.
From the battles at Lexing-
ton and Concord in spring
1775 to those at Trenton and
Princeton in winter 1776-77,
American militiamen and
then the ragged Continental
Army take on the world’s most
formidable fighting force and
struggle to avoid annihilation.
It is a gripping saga alive
with astonishing characters:
Henry Knox, the former
bookseller with an uncanny
understanding of artillery; Na-
thanael Greene, the blue-eyed
bumpkin who becomes one of
America’s greatest battle cap-
tains; Benjamin Franklin, the
self-made man who proves
himself the nation’s wiliest
diplomat; George Washing-
ton, the commander in chief
who learns the difficult art
of leadership when the war
seems all but lost.
The story is also told from
the British perspective: we see
the fight through their eyes
and down their gun barrels,
which makes the mortal con-
flict between the redcoats and
the rebels all the more com-
pelling.

Are Coming” is a tale of he-
roes and knaves, of sacrifice
and blunder, of redemption
and profound suffering. At-
kinson has given stirring
new life to the first act of our
country’s creation drama.
Celebrate the Moon Landing
On July 20, 1969, astronauts
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Al-
drin landed on the moon.
The library is pleased to of-
fer a public celebration of the
50th anniversary of the Apol-
lo 11 moon landing with Jeff
Phillips from the Eugene As-
tronomical Society this Satur-
day, July 20, at 1 p.m. Phillips
will share film clips of the his-
toric moon landing together
with interesting background
details and anecdotes.
Phillips has been a space
enthusiast since the launch-
ing of Sputnik when he was a
child. His father was an engi-
neer who worked on the Jupi-
ter C, the rocket that launched
America’s first satellite, the
Explorer 1, and America’s
first astronaut, Alan Shepard.
He has been a member of the
Eugene Astronomical Society
for over 20 years and some
of his photos have appeared
on Sky and Telescope weekly
update and the Celestron tele-
scope catalog.
This presentation, free and
open to the general public,
will also feature “moon pies”
courtesy of the Friends of the
Library.
