In “Underland,” he delivers his masterpiece: an epic explo- ration of the Earth’s under- worlds as they exist in myth, literature, memory, and the land itself. In this highly anticipated sequel to his international bestseller “The Old Ways,” Macfarlane takes readers on an extraordinary journey into humans’ relationship with darkness, burial and what lies beneath the surface of both place and mind. Traveling through “deep time” — the dizzying ex- panses of geologic time that stretch away from the present — he moves from the birth of the universe to a post-human future, from the prehistoric art of Nor- wegian sea caves to the blue depths of the Greenland ice cap, from Bronze Age fu- neral chambers to the cata- comb labyrinth below Paris, and from the underground fungal networks through which trees communicate to a deep-sunk “hiding place” where nuclear waste will be stored for 100,000 years to come. Woven through Macfar- lane’s own travels are the unforgettable stories of de- scents into the underland made across history by ex- plorers, artists, cavers, div- er, mourners, dreamers and murderers, all of whom have been drawn for different rea- sons to seek what Cormac McCarthy calls “the awful darkness within the world.” Global in its geography and written with great lyr- icism and power, “Under- land” speaks powerfully to our present moment. At once ancient and urgent, this is a book that will change the way you see the world. Celebrate Woody Guthrie’s Birthday Join Adam Miller this Sun- day, July 14, at 2 p.m., when he presents “The Life and Songs of Woody Guthrie.” In honor of Guthrie’s birth- day that day, the Friends of the Library will be providing birthday cake. Since 1995, legendary folksinger, storyteller and autoharp virtuoso Adam Miller, a resident of Drain, Ore., has performed live in over 2,000 American librar- ies in 48 states. One of the premier auto harpists in the world, he has distinguished himself as a master of non-fiction storytelling and as one of the great interpret- ers of American folksongs. He is an award-winning entertainer who never fails to get his audience singing along and is that rare per- former who appeals to audi- ences of all ages. Apollo 11 Moon Landing Anniversary On Saturday, July 20, at 1 p.m., Jeff Phillips from the Eugene Astronomical Soci- ety will be at the library dis- cussing the Apollo 11 moon landing, which occurred ex- actly 50 years ago that day. “My father was an engi- neer who worked on the Jupiter C, the rocket that launched America’s first satellite, the Explorer 1, and America’s first astronaut Alan Shepard,” Phillips said. “As a boy, I would sneak a transistor radio into school so I could listen to space launches.” One of those launches re- sulted in a moon landing on July 20, 1969, with Neil Armstrong setting foot out- side hours later. Phillips will discuss the moon landing and show some clips from the movie “Apollo 11.” The Friends of the Library will be providing refresh- ments.
