Book Review
“The Night Tiger”
by Yangsze Choo
Quick-witted, ambitious Ji
Lin is stuck as an apprentice
dressmaker, moonlighting as
a dance-hall girl to help pay
off her mother’s mahjong
debts. But when one of her
dance partners accidentally
leaves behind a gruesome
souvenir, Ji Lin plunges into
a dark adventure: a mirror
world of secrets and super-
stitions.
Eleven-year-old Chinese
houseboy Ren also has a
secret, a promise he must
fulfill to his dead master: to
find his master’s severed fin-
ger and bury it with his body.
Ren has 49 days to do so, or
his master’s soul will wander
the earth forever. As the days
tick relentlessly by, a series
of unexplained deaths racks
the district, along with whis-
pers about men who turn
into tigers.
Ji Lin’s and Ren’s increas-
ingly dangerous paths criss-
cross through lush plan-
tations, hospital storage
rooms, and ghostly dreams-
capes.
Dazzling and propulsive,
The Night Tiger by Yangsze
Choo, a Malaysian writer of
Chinese descent, is the com-
ing-of-age of a child and a
young woman, each search-
ing for their place in a soci-
ety that would rather they
stay invisible.
“The Life and Songs of
Woody Guthrie”
with Adam Miller
In his short life, Woody
Guthrie wrote over 1,000
American folk songs — and
he didn’t use an original mel-
ody for any of them! Please
join Adam Miller on Sunday,
July 14, at 2 p.m., when he
presents The Life and Songs
of Woody Guthrie, on Guth-
rie’s actual birthday.
Since 1995, legendary
folksinger, storyteller and
autoharp virtuoso Miller,
a resident of Drain, Ore.,
has performed live in over
2,000 American libraries in
48 states. One of the premier
autoharpists in the world, he
has distinguished himself as
a master of non-fiction sto-
rytelling and as one of the
great interpreters of Ameri-
can folksongs.
An award-winning en-
tertainer who never fails
to get his audience singing
along, he is that rare per-
former who appeals to au-
diences of all ages. His fam-
ily concerts are as enjoyable
for children as they are for
parents, grandparents, and
great-grandparents. A per-
former who enlightens as
well as entertains, he points
out fascinating connections
between events in history
and the songs that survived
them, emphasizing the im-
portance of history as a sto-
ry well told.
And, in honor of Guthrie’s
birthday, the Friends of the
Library will be providing
birthday cake.
Don’t miss this wonderful
concert, free and open to the
general public at the Siuslaw
Public Library.
