A RMSTRONG ‘T AKES O VER ’ THIRD AT B OX C AR July 5 High Tide PHOTO COURTESY OF DAVE DAVE PHOTOGRAPHY Driving his 2019 Yamaha YXZ1000 UTV race car, local sand drag racer Gary “G” Armstrong battled his way into the semi-finals and a third-place finish at the annual UTV Takeover Side by Side Wars at Box Car Dunes in North Bend last weekend. This year’s event drew an estimated 20,000 UTV enthusiasts to the Oregon Dunes for a week of camp- ing, recreational riding and sand competitions. UTV’s — also called “side by sides” because they can accommo- date up to four people — are a fairly new breed of 4-wheeled recreational vehicle that have become increasingly popular due to their car-like characteris- tics, safety and handling. UTV Takeover hosts four similar events in the U.S. each year. Armstrong, of Florence, will compete in the Albany Sand Drags this weekend to qualify for the NW Pro Car Sand Drag Championship Race Series, where he is cur- rently tied for fourth place in the standings. Armstrong’s racing spon- sors are Florence Yamaha/ Polaris/CanAm, Fullerton Sand Sports Tires and Wheels, Dasa Racing prod- ucts, Direct Drive CNC, Redline Racing, Oneal Racing Clothing, Dirt Wheels Magazine, Santa Cruz Bicycles and local Florence businesses Jack Smoot Welding and Siuslaw Signs & Graphics. 2:05am/ 6.2 7:19pm/ 2.4 M ASTERING THE S AND — P ART II July 4 1:08am / 8.2 2:50pm / 6.3 8:14am / 2.1 8:10pm / 2.3 July 5 1:57am / 8.0 3:37pm/ 6.5 8:59am/ -2.0 9:05pm/ 2.2 July 6 2:49am / 7.5 4:24pm / 6.6 9:45am / -1.6 10:04pm / 2.0 July 7 3:46am / 6.9 5:13pm / 6.7 10:33am / -1.1 11:10pm / 1.8 11:24am / -0.3 June 9 6:01am / 5.6 6:55pm / 7.1 Siuslaw News (Editor’s Note: In Part II of our look at the exponential growth of Sandboarding in South America and, most recently, Saudi Arabia, we talk with Sand Master Park owner and sandboarding guru Lon Beale who, in addition to relo- cating his park next to Fred Meyer, will soon be working as a consultant to establish a multi-million dollar sand- boarding park in Saudi Arabia.) “W July 8 4:49am / 6.2 6:04pm / 6.9 B Y J ARED A NDERSON 12:21am / 1.4 12:17pm / 0.5 hen they have a sandboarding tournament event, there’s 100 competitiors. When we have an event here in the U.S., there’s 20 competitors. The difference is, people that come to sandboard here in the U.S. do it as recreation,” said Beale. “They do it to have fun and have a good time. So that’s what we cater to. But in NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS A sandboarder surveys the terrain from atop a dune at Honeyman State Park. South America, they want to compete. They want to see who’s the best. As far as com- petition goes, there’s a world sandboard tour, and what they’re doing is just amazing. They’re every bit at the level of snowboarding. Whatever tricks they’re doing on snow, they’re doing on sand now.” As to why Americans don’t want to compete, Beale called it “the question of the day.” “We live in Florence.
