Join the Rotary Youth Exchange Florence Rotarians are currently looking for stu- dents and host families to be involved in Rotary Inter- national’s Youth Exchange Program this coming year. The Youth Exchange Program is a structured program of Rotary Inter- national to provide young people with an opportunity to meet individuals from other countries, experience new cultures, and learn first-hand about all aspects of life in another country. These exchanges are open to students 15 to 19 years old, and usually span for one academic year. Students live with more than one family in the host country and are required to attend school there. Host families, host clubs and entire communities are enriched by extended friendly contact with some- one from a different cul- ture. The program instills in young people the concept of international understand- ing and goodwill. Florence Rotary provides three host families for ap- proximately three months each. If you are interested in becoming a host family for one of these young students, please contact Beth Webb at 509-389-8619 or Jody Driv- er at 509-378-5710. For students and families interested in the outgoing student program, there will be an informational pre- sentation coming this Sep- tember, with the date and time of the event to be an- nounced through the high school and local media. SAINT MARY, OUR LADY OF THE DUNES CATHOLIC CHURCH New Life Lutheran helps feed the hungry When the offering plate is passed around during the Sunday service at New Life Lutheran, Florence Food Share “keeps the change” as all the coins go to it. The church also hosts a community sup- per once a month during nine months of the year and has a “bread Sunday” once a month to add to the food pantry. A new program has just been initiated with the Church Council’s blessing by Bryant and Gail Payne. Green bags are given to members of the congre- gation to fill with canned goods and other nonper- ishable foods. Bryant re- ported that he collected 225 pounds of food and delivered it to food share. This is the way the church fulfills the biblical direc- tive to feed the hungry. Florence Food Share began in 1980 as a grass- roots movement to pro- vide emergency food to the needy, elderly, un- employed and underem- ployed of Florence. It was put together by a group of churches, including New Life Lutheran, and oper- ated out of people’s garag- es and car trunks. Originally called Man- na Ministries, the food share operated out of var- ious locations until 1994 when it found a perma- nent home at New Life Lutheran Church. The Florence Food Share building was built with grants and a local building fund drive led by Del Phelps and Dave Dahlberg. Local contrac- tor Robert Wilcox led the volunteers and paid workers for the comple- tion of the building. The land on which it is built is leased to the food share by the church for $1 a year. Florence Food Share handles not only pack- aged food items but grows a garden with fresh produce. The food is giv- en at no cost to those who submit an application and qualify. Florence Food Share is located on New Life Lu- theran property at 2100 Spruce St. It continues to thrive and grow.
