SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, JUNE 22, 2019 | 3A On The Record Florence man sentenced for animal abuse of pit bull ‘Tink’ On Tuesday, June 11, Preston Hancock plead- ed no contest to animal abuse charges at the Florence Justice Court. Hancock was arrested in November 2018 by Flor- ence Police for abusing his female 7-year-old pit bull mix, “Tink,” along Highway 101. On the day of Han- cock’s arrest, Tink was brought to Oregon Coast Humane Society (OCHS) to be taken care of and kept as evidence pending trial. Upon receiving the an- imal from police, OCHS completed a veterinary check-up and assessment to determine the extent of its injuries and gen- eral condition. While it had no broken limbs, the animal was evaluated as being “head shy,” mean- ing it avoids hands com- ing towards its head — a reaction common among dogs that have been struck repeatedly and, as a result, become fearful of hands. The dog was also pro- nounced seriously un- derweight. For its age and breed, she was about 40 percent underweight. The veterinarian also noted that the dog was emotionally distressed. “With slow and careful positive care, the OCHS team built up Tink’s con- fidence and trust,” said OCHS Executive Direc- tor Mark Curran. “The team taught her to en- joy pets and strokes and worked on a carefully regimented plan to slowly get her up to her optimal weight.” In the subsequent months, Hancock report- edly missed court dates and the dog remained in the care of OCHS. Af- ter three months, OCHS worked with FPD and the court to get permission to have the animal spayed and moved into a foster home. “Tink has thrived in her foster home, enjoy- ing a family and home, as well as another canine companion,” said Curran. “Tink’s case is a great example of how OCHS works to fulfill its mission and serve our communi- ty,” said Jackie Parker, OCHS Board Vice Pres- ident. “We rescue, care for and find responsible, loving, forever homes for homeless and at-risk dogs and cats. Tink is a great example of how we serve our community.” Hancock was sen- tenced to 10 days in jail (suspended), 2 years pro- bation, 5 years of not be- ing allowed companion animals, and forfeiture of the dog to OCHS. To expedite the case, and ensure prompt for- feiture of Tink, OCHS waived its fees for board- ing of the animal, which added up to more than seven months of care. “Having Tink forfeited to the Humane Society so we could find her a per- manent, loving home was much more important to us than the boarding fees,” said Curran. “An- imal abuse is a serious crime and must not be ignored. We are here to be the voice for these ani- mals and were very happy to speak up on Tink’s be- half. The level of coordi- nation and support Tink’s case received from the FPD, the court and prose- cutors, her vet, her fosters and the OCHS team is an example of how we can make a difference and make our community a safer and better place for animals. “Not every communi- ty cares about animals as much as ours, and we should be proud of that.” Upon conclusion of the trial, the dog’s foster fam- ily formally adopted her Tink. Dry weather puts early end to outdoor burning season June 14 marked the last day for outdoor burning for most Lane County residents until October. The season closed one day early this year due to elevated fire danger; the season will re-open Oct. 1 pending the end of wild- fire season. During the closed sea- son, yard debris can be disposed of at one of sev- eral local debris collection or recycling centers, such as Lane Forest Products, Rexius or Lane Coun- ty’s transfer stations and dump sites. Composting and chipping are always encouraged. Residents who burn during the closed sea- son are subject to viola- tions ranging from $50 to $2,500 or more.
