Florence Disabled Ameri-
can Veterans (DAV) Chapter
23 provides free transporta-
tion to veterans five days a
week, if needed, to hospitals
in Portland, Eugene and Rose-
burg for ongoing treatment
and medical appointments.
Swantz, the senior vice
commander, has been making
the more than 12-hour trip
each week for seven years, in
addition to the other volunteer
work he does in town.
“Most of the vets I work
with are Korean or Vietnam
vets. I do have a couple of
WWII vets, but most of the
people I transport, male and
female, are from the Korea or
Vietnam era,” he said.
Swantz has been recognized
statewide and on a national
level for his volunteer efforts
relating to veterans’ issues. He
will be attending a ceremony
in Washington D.C. later this
month to receive his award at
the 2019 DAV National Con-
vention.
The DAV recognizes a vol-
unteer in every state, each
year, to receive the George
H. Seal Memorial Award.
The award honors the mem-
ory and accomplishments of
George H. Seal, a World War
II combat-injured paratroop-
er who made many signif-
icant contributions during
his lengthy career as a DAV
national representative and
member of the National Advi-
sory Committee.
This prestigious commen-
dation is given to an individ-
ual that provides an outstand-
ing example of service and
dedication to the needs of ill
and injured veterans. Swantz
is the recipient of the award
for the State of Oregon.
In 2018, DAV volunteers
donated more than 1.4 million
hours of their time nation-
wide.
“I co-chair the Veterans Pa-
rade Committee and I’m in-
volved with buddy poppies for
the VFW (Veterans of Foreign
Wars) and forget-me-nots for
the DAV. I clean up the airport
and Veteran’s Memorial Park,
but mostly I think I received
this award for the work I do
driving the DAV van.”
Swantz has been assisting
vets in getting to their medical
appointments for the last sev-
en years but he also provides
direction and encouragement
to other veterans who may
not realize the help the gov-
ernment and local support
groups, like the Band of Broth-
ers, can provide.
“I feel an obligation to my
fellow veterans to help to take
care of them if they can’t take
care of themselves,” Swantz
said. “I drive the van for two
purposes. … One is to get
them to their appointments,
but the second reason is to
make sure they know what
they are entitled to. It’s amaz-
ing how many vets I take to
Portland that don’t know what
they are entitled too. A lot of
guys that I talk with feel they
don’t deserve to be compen-
sated; they say, ‘All I did was
serve my time.’”
Swantz is pleased that his
volunteer work has been rec-
ognized but deflects the atten-
tion he is receiving by pointing
to the work other vets in the
area are doing.
“I’m proud of the fact that I
received this award, but I don’t
think I do any more than any-
body else. I realize they have
to give it to someone, but I
didn’t do anything more than
any other volunteer does. I
was just the one they decided
deserved it this year,” he said.
Swantz also wants to re-
mind the community that Flag
Day is Friday, June 14. There
will be an official “retirement”
ceremony for American flags
that are old or have deteriorat-
ed to the point where they are
Little Log Church to host
Renaissance experience
On Saturday, June 8 at 3
p.m., the remarkable ensem-
ble Byrdsong Consort will
be returning to the Little
Log Church and Museum in
Yachats for a special program
of instrumental and vocal
music.
The concert features pieces
from the 16th through 18th
centuries, as well as original
arrangements of traditional
songs and dance melodies
for viols, violins, recorders,
flutes, harpsichord and voice.
Composers include O’Ca-
rolan, Playford, Brade, Fal-
conieri and a special nod to
composers of our own time:
the Beatles.
The group’s name “Byrd-
song Consort” refers to Wil-
liam Byrd, an English com-
poser of the renaissance.
The musicians are Michael
Bardossi, Alice Barkan, Julia
Heydon, Elinora Sears, and
Tom Sears, all of Eugene.
