Lift installation nearly complete
at Pioneer Museum
On Tuesday, June 4,
from 5 to 7 p.m., the Siu-
slaw Pioneer Museum will
celebrate the long-awaited
lift connecting the first and
second floors, allowing
easy access to the upstairs
displays for visitors who
are unable to climb stairs.
The afternoon program
will also celebrate Bob
Friedman’s gift to the mu-
seum of David Thimgan’s
Florence Schooner, and
formal acknowledgement
of the addition to the per-
manent collection of Mary
Colgan Bennetts’ Covered
Bridges of Lane County
with commentary by Kev-
in Mittge.
The addition of the lift
to the museum has been
in the planning stages for
several years and now is
a reality thanks to careful
planning and generous do-
nations from a few mem-
bers of the Florence com-
munity.
According to Nancy
Sobottka, President of the
Board of Trustees, the lift
will provide easy access to
the many collections on
the second floor and all of
the events that take place
there, including monthly
Storytimes.
Refreshments will be
served during the June 4
event.

Florence Regional Arts
Alliance (FRAA) has an-
nounced an upcoming
3-day workshop, “Pocket
Sketching for Fun and Trav-
el” by critically-acclaimed
traveling artist Kath Ma-
caulay. Pocket Sketching is
the perfect technique for
travel journaling, hiking,
biking, sauntering, sitting
in a café or the airport.
Participants will learn to
capture what they see in 25
minutes or less using a wa-
ter soluble pen, a 4 x 6-inch
pad of paper and a small
paint set.
As, Macaulay explains,
“This class is ideal for the
timid beginner to paint
fearlessly in public, and the
advanced artist who wants
minimal equipment, total
portability, speed, no inter-
ruptions and no clean-up.
Learn enough to play for a
lifetime.”
Nationally known and
based in Tucson, Ariz., Ma-
caulay travels the country
teaching her technique. Her
workshops are attended by
both professional artists
and those who have had
no experience since grade
school.
“The workshop format
is very hands on — almost
like an army boot camp,”
says Macaulay.
Day one will include
basic technique and land-
scape; day two will be still
life and people; and day
three will be on location,
plein air, “using the tech-
nique fearlessly anywhere,”
Macaulay says.
