Classic cars prepare for Rhody Days Car Show
Preparations for the 27th Rhody Days Car
Show and Shine are underway. Th is is Flor-
ence’s longest running car show and a big
draw during the Rhody Days festivities.
On the morning of Saturday, May 18, you
can see a wide variety of Classic Cars and
Trucks 1979 and older, including a few Brit-
ish Cars and usually a couple of military ve-
hicles. Th is is a judged event, with the award
ceremony beginning at 1:30 p.m., and will be
held in the Parking lot for City Lights Cin-
emas and Gorcery Outlet, located at 2066
Highway 101.
“Th is car show, with its convenient loca-
tion, is a great activity for people of all ages,”
said Joe Scalera, one of the BeachKomber
Car Club members who has been volunteer-
ing for this car show since its beginning.
Th e central location provides easy access
for all spectators to enjoy the cars, listen to
the DJ playing classic songs and partake in
the raffl e, which always has a great array of
prizes to win. Th is year includes several gift
certifi cates for lodging in the local area.
“As the years go by, car ownership has
greatly increased for the ladies. It has been
fun to watch the women bring their cars in
and show them. Husbands and wifes now
have their own cars. Th ey park next to each
other and enjoy hanging out and talking
about classics,” Scalera said.
Th e BeachKomber Car Club stated they
could not thank each of the businesses
enough for giving up their parking lot for
the day so the event can be held. Th ese buis-
nesses include: Florence Shipping Solutions,
Th e Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles,
Habitat For Humanity Restore, Focal Point
Optical, City Light Cinemas, Grocery Out-
let, McDonalds, Pizza Hut and Knecht’s.
“Th is show always has a nice turnout of
spectators and a wide range of classics to en-
joy,” Scalera continued. “Many members of
our community show their cars at this event,
and there are lots of entries from neighbor-
ing states.”
T-shirts and dash plaques are available at
the show. Th is year’s logo features rhodo-
dendrons, a military jeep and a yellow Chev-
rolet Bel Air.
To buy a shirt up early, go to Shervin’s Au-
tomotive, located at 44th Street and High-
way 101, or Twin Lakes Store, located three
miles north of Florence on Highway 101.
If you have a classic car you want
to show, there is a preregistration
and mini show and shine on Friday,
May 17, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Ad-
ditional registration is done the day
of the show. Th e registration booth
opens at 8 a.m. on May 18, and the
show starts at 10. Registration is $20.
