Rhody Days is Oregon’s second-longest running fl oral festival. Th e Florence Area Chamber of Com- merce, with its team of dozens of volun- teers, puts on the big event each year. Th e highlight will be the grand fl oral parade at noon on Sunday, May 19. It begins at 27th Street and Highway 101 and travels about three miles to and through Historic Old Town Florence. Th is year’s grand marshal is the Heceta Head Lighthouse, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2019. Th is year’s Florence Rhododendron Fes- tival offi cially begins with the coronation of Queen Rhododendra and the King of the Coast on Wednesday, May 15, at the Florence Events Center at 6:30 p.m. Members of the court have been sell- ing festival pins for $3 to raise money for scholarships. Th e pins are also good for $1 off a bowl of chowder throughout May at participating restaurants around town. Th e list includes Bay Street Grille, Claw- son’s Wheelhouse, Th e Hukilau, Th e Fire- house, ICM Restaurant and Traveler’s Cove. Th e Davis Shows’ Carnival, now it its 50th year in Florence, also opens May 15 at 3 p.m. It continues throughout the festival at the Port of Siuslaw Boardwalk. Th e street fair, beginning at the corner of Bay and Laurel Streets in Old Town, is ex- pected to feature more than 30 vendors and exhibitors. Th e street fair will be Friday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday’s schedule is packed with fun for everyone. Th e 40th annual 5K Rhody Run & Walk starts at 9 a.m. at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. Participants can pre- register at EclecticEdgeRacing.com. Th e annual kid’s Junior Parade, coordi- nated by the volunteer fi refi ghters of Sius- law Valley Fire and Rescue, is Saturday at noon. Th ere will be games with lots of prizes at the Kiwanis Kids Games at the end of the parade route at 27th and Oak Streets. Th e American Rhododendron Society’s Siuslaw Chapter will again host the annual rhododendron and azalea show and plant sale at the Florence Events Center on Satur- day and Sunday. Th e exhibition is open for anyone to display their fl owers. Th ose wishing to enter their prized cul- tured or local wild rhodies must register Saturday, May 18, from 7 to 9 a.m. Judging will start promptly at 9. Th e show will open from 1 to 5 p.m. aft er completion of the judging, and reopen at 10 a.m. Sunday. Th e plant sale starts at 10 both mornings. Th ere is more information on the plants and the event at siuslawars.org. Also at the Florence Events Center will be the annual Florence Regional Arts Alliance Rhody Days Arts Festival. It takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Th e annual Coast Radio KCST/KCFM classic car cruise is Saturday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Staging takes place at the Rhody Cruisers’ Classic Car Show’s annual show- n-shine at 21st Street and Highway 101 in the Grocery Outlet and City Lights Cin- emas parking lot. Th e Do-Wah Riders, the nationally-tour- ing high-energy country band with a Cajun twist, perform at 4 p.m. Saturday at the park behind Ixtapa Restaurant at 10th Street and Highway 101. Th ey’ll also perform at the KCST cruise and the parade. Th e multi-award-winning “ultimate El- vis,” Justin Shandor, performs Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the FEC. Tickets are required. Th e Rhody Express, Florence’s public transit bus, will off er free rides within city limits Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sat- urday from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. Th e Florence Area Chamber of Com- merce’s executive director, Bettina Hanni- gan, says this year’s festival theme, “Coastal Canvas” highlights the Florence area’s arts community and opens the door showing off the area’s natural beauty alongside the beauty craft ed by local artists. “We live in an open canvas and we can use what is around us to build upon and thrive as a community. We have outstand- ing visual arts, culinary arts, theater/per- forming arts, and more here in the Siuslaw Region. It’s all part of why we are known as Oregon’s Coastal Playground,” she said.
