PeaceHealth, local schools to offer free sports physicals
Free sports physical forms are available at schools in Florence and Mapleton
On Tuesday June 4,
PeaceHealth
Medical
Group in Florence will be
partnering with Florence
and Mapleton schools to
provide free sports physi-
cals to students.
PeaceHealth
Medical
Group will contribute
medical supplies along
with the time and exper-
tise of five providers and
several Medical Assistants
for the sports physicals,
which can be obtained
during the Sports Physical
Day being held at Siuslaw
Middle School.
Sports physicals are
required in order to par-
ticipate in extracurric-
ular sports in grades 6
through 12, and in some
youth sports leagues. This
pre-participation physical
exam is an important part
of safe sports participa-
tion.
The exam can help
screen athletes for poten-
tial illness or conditions
that may limit or restrict
their ability to participate
in a school sport. It helps
ensure that students who
play sports are physical-
ly capable of meeting the
demands of the sport in
which they choose to par-
ticipate, and don’t have
any conditions that may
be aggravated by intense
exercise.
Sports physicals are re-
quired prior to the student
starting any type of prac-
tice related to their chosen
sport.
During the Sports Phys-
ical Day, students receive a
“Sports Pre-Participation
Examination.” This exam-
ination includes height,
weight, blood pressure,
pulse check, eye chart
exam and examination by
a provider. Also included
is a health history ques-
tionnaire that asks about
the student’s medical his-
tory of injury, illness and
other conditions, such as
asthma, to help ensure
that they are being prop-
erly cared for and any or
all conditions a student
may have are being prop-
erly addressed.
If a provider encounters
a medical issue with a stu-
dent, this information will
be documented on their
sports physical form and
the parents and/or guard-
ians will be notified by
an employee from Peace-
Health Medical Group to
allow student issues to be
addressed by their Prima-
ry Care physician.
Sports physical forms
are available at the schools.

Siuslaw
from 1B
carrying the 4A’s best mark
of the season (191feet, 7
inches) by more than 13
feet over the second-best
throw (168-11), the Viking
senior’s chances of a repeat
for the 2019 title are good.
Sophomore
hurdler
Ryan Jennings will be the
only other member of the
Siuslaw boys’ team joining
Rendon-Padilla this week-
end after winning the Sky-
Em 300-meter hurdles title
in 41.47.
Among the girls’ team
members
representing
Siuslaw at this year’s 4A
meet will be a trio of soph-
omores
—
Brea
Blankenship,
Gracie
Freudenthal and Andrea
Osbon — along with
junior Hannah Rannow
and senior Naomi Shoji.
Blankenship set a per-
sonal best to finish second
in the 800 meters (2:21.20)
and ran a leg on the sec-
ond-place 4x400-meter
relay team with Rannow,
Freudenthal and Shoji
(1:03.94) to qualify for
state.
Freudenthal placed
second in both the 100-
meter hurdles (16.34) and
300 hurdles (47.72).

title in the 800-meter race
(2:20.12), defending her
district title from last sea-
son, and placed third in
the 3,000-meter race with
a state-qualifying time of
10:33.43.
Rannow
currently
holds the state-best times
this season in both events,
clocking PR times of
2:18.32 and 10:14.56,
respectively.
Osbon swept two of
three titles in the throw-
ing events, winning the
shot put (37-10) and dis-
cus (104-7) and nearly
qualified for a third
throwing event at state
with a PR throw of 100-3
in the javelin for third
place.
Osbon’s performance
earned her recognition as
the Sky-Em’s Outstanding
Girl Thrower.
Siuslaw had 19 other
athletes finish eighth or
better, just missing state
qualification but helping
the Vikings in team scor-
ing.
