Car show T-shirts now available
T-shirts have arrived for
the 27th annual Rhody Days
Car Show and Shine.
The car show takes place
Saturday, May 18, and is
open to cars and trucks from
1979 and earlier.
This year’s logo features
rhododendrons, a military
jeep and a yellow Chevrolet
Bel Air.
To buy a shirt early, go
to Shervin’s Automotive,
located at 44th Street and
Highway 101, or Twin Lakes
Store, located three miles
north of Florence on High-
way 101.

National Safe Boating
Week is the official launch
of the 2019 North American
Safe Boating Campaign. The
U.S. Coast Guard and Coast
Guard Auxiliary wish to help
ensure the public has a safe,
secure and enjoyable boat-
ing experience this season by
bringing attention to import-
ant life-saving tips for recre-
ational boaters.
At the May 6 Florence City
Council meeting, Safe Boat-
ing Partners Mayor Joe Hen-
ry and the City of Florence,
in an effort to help spread the
Safe Boating message, pre-
sented a National Safe Boat-
ing Week proclamation to
Team Coast Guard members
from Station Siuslaw River.
Senior Chief Boatswain’s
Mate (BMCS) Jay Nilles,
Officer-in-Charge at Station
Siuslaw River, accepted the
proclamation.
Both Mayor Henry and
Senior Chief Nilles donned
life jackets to hit home the
important message.
Mayor Henry also shared
a recent letter from Rear
Admiral David Throop,
Commandant of the Thir-
teenth Coast Guard District,
officially thanking the com-
munity of Florence for its
support during the partial
government shutdown earli-
er this year.
BMCS Nilles echoed the
sentiments of the Admiral,
stating he had never seen a
community come together
like the citizens of Florence
to help support the Coast
Guard.
He expressed the support
was overwhelming and tre-
mendously appreciated. As a
small token of appreciation,
Senior Chief Nilles present-
ed the Mayor and each city
council member with an em-
bossed Heceta Lighthouse/
Coast Guard coin.
The proclamation indi-
cates that on average, 650
people die each year in
boating-related accidents in
the U.S. and 76 percent of
those fatalities are caused
by drowning. A significant
number of boaters who lose
their lives by drowning each
year could be alive today had
they worn their life jackets.
Thusly, the number one
safe boating tip is always
“Wear Your Life Jacket”
when underway as it could
save a life.

Florence Habitat for Hu-
manity, the nonprofit orga-
nization devoted to a world
where everyone has a decent
place to live, is giving away a
backyard playhouse on Sun-
day, May 19, at the Rhodo-
dendron Festival Grand Flo-
ral Parade.
The $10 entry tickets can
be purchased at Florence
Habitat ReStore, 2004 High-
way 101, now through Satur-
day, May 18, and all proceeds
will go toward supporting
Florence Habitat’s work of
building affordable housing
in the local community.
The grand prize is the
playhouse, all ready for the
backyard. The second prize
is a Victorian dollhouse and
the third prize is Scentsy
Warmer.
A decent home provides
the strength, stability and
independence that families
need, and Habitat for Hu-
manity’s vision is a world
where everyone has a de-
cent place to live.
Habitat
homeowners
