Help “Clean Up
Community band presents Spring Concert
Mapleton” on May 11
The community is invited
to join the fun on Saturday,
May 11, from 9 a.m. to noon
for the annual “Clean Up Ma-
pleton Event.” From the main
bridge to the gas station on
Highway 126, participants
will be picking up trash,
weeding and clearing brush.
This year, there will be a
friendly competition forum.
Winners will be determined
by two categories: the team
with the most trash collected
and the team with the greatest
number of team members. In
addition, there will be team
prizes donated by the Ginger-
bread Village Restaurant.
People are asked to bring
their own work gloves, gar-
den tools, etc.
Check in will be at the
Mapleton Food Share. Dis-
posable vinyl gloves, trash
bags and safety vests will be
provided. Lunch will also be
served afterwards.
Students and staff from the
Mapleton Middle and High
school will be helping along
with community members.

The Pacific Coast Wind Ensemble
will present its annual Spring Concert at
the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw
in Florence on Saturday, May 4, begin-
ning at 2 p.m. The concert is a benefit for
Friends of Florence Van Fans.
The program will highlight selections
from the musicals “West Side Story”
and “Chicago” as well as marches by
Karl King, Henry Fillmore and John
Phillip Sousa. Featured also will be a
suite from “Game of Thrones,” Frank
Ticheli’s evocative setting of “Shenan-
doah” and “Intermezzo for Band” by
the Dutch composer Jan de Haan. The
two Sousa pieces on the program will be
the rarely heard “Fugue on Yankee Doo-
dle” and the frequently heard “Stars and
Stripes Forever.”
The band’s principal conductor is Da-
vid Olson, who has had a long history
with the band, serving as co-director
and lead alto sax in prior years. Besides
the Wind Ensemble, Olson also con-
ducts the Florence Community Choir.
The concert is free but a donation of $5
per person and $10 per family would be
appreciated. Proceeds will go to Friends
of the Florence Van Fans. Non-perish-
able food items will also be collected for
the Newport Food Pantry.

composed of about 35 professional and
amateur musicians from the central Or-
egon coast, and has provided concert
band entertainment for more than two
decades. The band plays several concerts
per year throughout the region: sea-
sonal celebration December concert in
Yachats, spring concerts in Florence and
Newport, Waldport High School gradu-
ation and a house concert at Florentine
Estates.
No auditions are required to join the
band. Rehearsals are Monday nights
during the school year, alternately in
Waldport and Florence. Most of the
members are adult, but high school stu-
dents are always welcome. For further

As part of the band’s outreach pro-
gram, Pacific Coast Wind Ensemble
provides scholarships to local music
students, mainly from Newport, Wald-
port and Siuslaw high schools. Persons
interested in applying for a scholarship
should contact the music teacher at his
or her local school.

City Club to feature Special Election candidates
May’s City Club presenta-
tion will focus on seven can-
didates in the upcoming May
21 Special Election— all who
are running for positions that
involve our youth. These in-
clude Lane Community Col-
lege (LCC), Lane Educational
Service District (ESD) and
Siuslaw School Board.
City Club of Florence will
meet from noon to 1 p.m. on
Thursday, May 2, at Ocean
Dunes Golf Links, 3345 Mun-
sel Lake Road. Meetings are
open to the public and lunch
is available for purchase.
Lisa Fragala and Stefan Ga-
len Strek are both running
for LCC Director Position 7
at Large.
Fragala did her education
coursework at LCC and re-
ceived her master’s degree
from Oregon State Universi-
ty. She is currently an educa-
tor in the 4J School District
and was previously a U.S.
Forest Service Wildlife Biol-
ogist. She has also served on
the City of Eugene Planning
Commission.
Strek is currently in Fi-
nancial Aid Operations and
received his bachelor of arts
in Art and French from the
University of Oregon in 2019.
He graduated from South Eu-
gene High School. He ran for
U.S. Congressional District 4
in the 2018 primary election.
Mark Boren and Nora Kent
are running for Lane ESD Po-
sition 4.
Kent is an instructor at
LCC Florence Center. She
received her master’s in edu-
cation from the University of
Oregon and received a post
graduate degree in English as
a Second Language from Or-
egon State University. She is a
grandmother and communi-
ty organizer.
Boren is a retired Lane Fire
Authority Training Officer.
He also worked as a Special
Educational
Instructional
Assistant for Lane ESD. He
graduated from Willamette
High School and from LCC
with an Emergency Medical
Technician certificate. He is
currently the board chairper-
son of the Fern Ridge School
District, as well as a Compo-
nent District Board Liaison
to the ESD Board of Direc-
tors.
There will be three unop-
posed candidates for the Siu-
slaw School Board in atten-
dance on May 2 as well. They
are Bob Sneddon for Position
3 and Dennis King for Posi-
tion 5, who were both recent-
ly appointed to the board to
fill vacant positions. In addi-
tion, incumbent Bill McDou-
gle is running for Position 7.
Sneddon is a retail store
manager in Florence and a
Siuslaw High School Grad-
uate. He has served on the
Board of Directors for West-
ern Lane Ambulance and as a
Florence City Councilor.
McDougle is a retired
teacher and principal and was
a Trustee for the Bakersfield
City, Calif., School District
from 2008 through 2015.
King is a retired teacher.
He received his Initial Ad-
ministrative License in Ed-
ucation from Portland State
University and his master’s in
education from Western Ore-
gon University.

The Siuslaw Education
Foundation is hosting the
Spring Education Celebration
and Carnival at the Siuslaw
Middle School on Saturday,
May 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event is open to all.
Celebrate learning by en-
joying student demonstra-
tions of robots, Battle of the
Books, Knowledge Bowl,
Health Occupations, comput-
er projects and more.
Celebrate arts education
with student entertainment
while also celebrating life with
carnival games, face painting,
photo ops, informational
displays and concessions, in-
cluding BJ’s Ice Cream.
The Siuslaw Education
Foundation raises funds for
the Mapleton and Siuslaw
School Districts for purpos-
es that enhance academic
achievement and expand
learning opportunities for
students.
There is no charge for the
event. Carnival tickets and
food tickets will be for sale
and donations will be grate-
fully accepted.
Siuslaw Education Foun-
dation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit
corporation.
Visitors will also have an
opportunity to get involved
in the schools and learn about
future projects.
COCBR Scholarships due Saturday

Board of Realtors is offer-
ing scholarships to Florence
area residents dedicated to
the pursuit of knowledge and
achievement of dreams — but
