Deadline approaching for FURA board applicants COURTESY PHOTO Siuslaw Tale Spinners President Vicki Kennedy (left) of the local branch of Toastmasters International recently presented an award to Jim Wolak for his performance in the area Toastmasters evaluation contest. Wolak earned his right to compete in the district contest on April 6. The Siuslaw Tail Spinners meet the first, second and third Thursdays of every month at 5:30 p.m. at the Port of Siuslaw Office, 100 Harbor Street. Early Rhody Show today, tomorrow This year’s annual Early Rhododendron Show should be very interesting for local rhododendron enthusiasts. With the recent wind, rain, drought, heat, cold, sleet, snow — only the hardiest, most tenacious flowers will shine bright in April. The show is open to any- one who would like to share their beautiful trusses with the world and possibly go home with a ribbon or tro- phy. A few guidelines to follow: select a truss that is as com- pletely open as possible; try to find the straightest stem; bug bites are not our favor- ite design, but sometimes we can’t avoid them; wipe any dust or dirt from the leaves with water only and remem- ber, everyone has had the same weather as you. Don’t worry about them being perfect. The more, the merrier. Judging will commence at 9 a.m. Saturday and the viewing will be as soon as the judging is finished; usu- ally around noon. Doors close Saturday at 5 p.m. and will open at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 14, until 5 p.m. Beautiful plants will also be available at the show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. For more information, call Day Farrald at 541-590- 3161. Anyone with an interest in supporting the revitaliza- tion of the Florence down- town area, or who wants to help with efforts to develop downtown for its tourism, commercial prospects and as Florence’s community core should consider joining the Florence Urban Renewal Agency (FURA). FURA serves to imple- ment the projects and efforts of the Florence Downtown Plan through execution of the tax increment financing. As a timely example, FURA has been instrumen- tal in the development and financing of the ReVision Florence streetscape design project currently under con- struction on Highways 101 and 126. FURA consists of nine members, of which five shall be citizens at large. Special consideration will be given to the potential appoint- ment of elected members of the governing bodies of the Western Lane Ambulance District, Port of Siuslaw, Siu- slaw Valley Fire and Rescue and/or the Siuslaw Library District. FURA generally meets once per month on the fourth Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Persons interested in positions should expect to attend recurring meetings and devote time for study of issues and performance above and beyond meeting attendance.
