In spite of nearly a week of
constant rain threatening to
postpone last week’s Sky-Em
league openers at Marist High
School, the Vikings were able to
dodge enough rain to take on the
Spartans in baseball and softball
last Tuesday.
In baseball, Marist was able to
get out to a quick 4-0 lead in the
bottom of the first inning, then
added another run in the bottom
of the second while keeping
Siuslaw scoreless. Meanwhile,
Marist pitcher Will Bullock, a
senior, held the Viks to just three
hits during the first four innings,
retiring 8 Siuslaw batters with
strikeouts along the way.
The Vikings rotated four bat-
ters against the Spartans, with
Mapleton senior Gabe Simington
throwing the first 2 1/2 innings,
until Marist began stringing
together a series of hits in the
bottom of the third. Siuslaw
sophomore Clay Kramer and
junior Jared Northrop each came
to the mound in the third inning,
but were unable to stop the
Spartans before 9 more runs had
crossed the plate.

Siuslaw junior Ryan Rendon-Padilla continued
his march toward defending his current 4A state
title in the javelin, throwing a new school record
during last Tuesday’s Sky-Em JV track meet at Siu-
slaw High School. Rendon-Padilla bested what had
previously been the school record of 181 feet, 11
inches, set by Trent Reavis in 2017.
Tuesday, Rendon-Padilla cleared 191-7, improv-
ing on Reavis’ throw by more than 10 feet. It was
also a personal best for Rendon-Padilla by more
than 10 feet.
The Viking junior went on to win the discus on
Tuesday with a season-best mark of 119-10.
It was a strong day all around for Siuslaw’s junior
boys, with wins for Isaiah Jones in the 200 me-
ters with a PR time of 24.94; Kiger Johnson in the
400-meter race in a PR time of 55.76; and Brendon
Jensen running a PR at 2:05.74 in the 800 meters
for the win.
Siuslaw sophomore Ryan Jennings also had a
standout day, setting PRs and winning both the
1,500-meter race (4:38.11) and 300 hurdles (43.24).
For the Lady Vikings, it was a mixture of soph-
omores, juniors and seniors landing the day’s top
marks.
Sophomores Andrea Osbon and Brea Blanken-
ship each claimed wins, beginning with a PR for
Blankenship in the 3,000-meter race in 11:20.59.
Osbon won the discus with a throw of 94-3.5.
In the 400 meters, junior Hannah Rannow ran a
PR time of 1:04.84 for the win, then went on to win
the 800 meters in 2:27.93.
In the shot put, senior Madison Reynolds threw a
season-best mark of 32.6 for the win.

Winter steelhead fishing
has been slow on the Alsea

sunny blue skies have cre-
ated tough conditions. The
warmer weather is warm-
ing up the water tempera-
tures and making the fish
more active and they are
starting to move around in
the basin.
The popular NF Alsea

clear and has been slow
and will benefit from the
