Volunteers needed Saturday to
stack firewood with Kiwanis
Florence Kiwanis Club is
having a wood stacking work
day at Florence Municipal
Airport on Saturday, April 13,
from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. All are
welcome to help for any time
they can.
“In our firewood program,
we collect firewood and logs
from different places in the
community, then we cut and
split them, and they are avail-
able to be delivered at no cost
to needy families who depend
on firewood as a primary
source of heat,” said Florence
Kiwanis President Dick Shores.
While the club is open to
collecting additional fire-
wood, it first needs to stack
the wood already at the air-
port. This Saturday, volun-
teers will be there for the en-
tire time stacking wood.
Thanks to Lil Walts Woods,
there is no chainsaw, wood
splitter or ax work to be done.
Woods will bring a wood pro-
cessor to cut and split the wood
for the volunteers to stack.
Kiwanis is providing bot-
tled water and hot dogs for the
volunteers. People are asked to
bring work gloves.
Those attending should
enter the Florence Municipal
Airport, 2001 Airport Lane,
from the main entrance and
head north on the gravel road.
The wood is located at the
north end of the airport prop-
erty.
The Kiwanis Firewood Pro-
gram intends to start deliver-
ing wood later this year.

— Agatha Christie! It’s About
Time Productions is about to
unveil a mystery dinner show
that spoofs old-fashioned
whodunits, the medical pro-
fession, “female problems”
and theater folks with “Mur-
der on the Oriental Rug.”
Penned by Tony Schwartz
and Marylou Ambrose,
the show is a play within a
play. When half of the cast
of “Murder on the Oriental
Rug” bails out, the remaining
performers are stuck playing
all the roles. During the first
act, you’ll meet a Shakespear-
ean actor with a drinking

The cast of “Murder on the Oriental Rug” set out to
entertain and confound during a murder mystery din-
ner at the Florence Elks Lodge on Saturday, April 27.
problem, a washed-up for-
mer child star, a bimbo with
a short memory, and a hap-
less costumer who finds her-
self onstage — playing a man.
During the play within a
play, you’ll visit the exclusive
clinic of Dr. Charles Ovary,
renowned hot flash special-
ist who’s secretly treating a
famous actress trying des-
perately to regain her youth.
You’ll get to know the doc-
tor’s clueless wife, his pas-
sionate female protégé, the
actress’s hunky husband, a
flighty French maid, a shifty
handyman and an inspector
investigating the dead body
on the Oriental rug.
Will the play make it to
Broadway? Will the perform-
ers remember their lines?
Will the Shakespearean actor
fit into the maid’s costume?
Will the chalk outline come
out of the rug? Will the in-
spector solve the murder?
Will another murder occur?
Before the evening’s over,
someone else will be ruth-
lessly murdered, and it’s
up to the audience to solve
the crime. Winners will be
drawn from those who cor-
rectly guess the murderer
and motive.
The curtain rises for one
night only on Friday, April
27, at the Florence Elks
Lodge, 1686 12th St.
What can you expect from
an audience participation
murder mystery? Fun the
minute you walk in the door!
Doors open at 5:30 p.m.,
when you’ll get a chance to
have a cocktail, if you desire,
and mingle. At 6 p.m., at-
tendees will enjoy a delicious
dinner. The show starts after
dinner, around 7 p.m.

34th annual Early Rhododendron Show opens Saturday
Rhodies, Rhodies every-
where and all for us to see!
This year’s annual Early
Rhododendron Show should
be very interesting for local
rhododendron enthusiasts.
With the recent wind, rain,
drought, heat, cold, sleet, snow
— only the hardiest, most te-
nacious flowers will shine
bright in April.
The show is open to any-
one who would like to share
their beautiful trusses with the
world and possibly go home
with a ribbon or trophy. A
few guidelines to follow: select
a truss that is as completely

open as possible; try to find
the straightest stem; bug bites
are not our favorite design,
but sometimes we can’t avoid
them; wipe any dust or dirt
from the leaves with water
only and remember, everyone
has had the same weather as
you. Don’t worry about them
being perfect. The more, the
merrier.

ter, bring your flowers to the
Florence Events Center, 715
Quince St., between 7 and
9 a.m. Saturday, April 13.
Our knowledgeable garden
nymphs will help with the
proper category placement.
Judging will commence at 9
a.m. Saturday and the viewing
will be as soon as the judging
is finished; usually around
noon. Doors close Saturday at
5 p.m. and will open at 10 a.m.
Sunday, April 14, until 5 p.m.
