Food Share and Cross Road to hold Library hosts Myrtle Creek author Robert Leo Heilman
bake sale to support residents
Florence Food Share and
Cross Road Church are
jointly hosting a Jewelry,
Book and Bake Sale on Sat-
urday, March 16 from 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m. at the Cross Road
Church, located at 1380
10th St. in Florence.
The sale will bene-
fit low-income residents
of Western Lane County
who receive healthy food
through the various distri-
bution programs of FFS. It
will also benefit children in
the Mapleton and Florence
school districts who are at
risk for hunger by provid-
ing nutritious meals during
the school year though the
Backpack for Kids program.
There will be thousands
of items of bling, costume
and vintage jewelry for sale
at bargain prices. A wide
array of cakes, pies, cookies
and other baked goods and
desserts will be available, as
will an assortment of gently
used cookbooks.
“This is our first time
partnering with Cross Road
Church,” said Florence Food
Share board member Judy
Plumery. “We are looking
forward to working with
them to put together an
event that will benefit all of
our Western Lane County
neighbors who are vulnera-
ble to an inadequate supply
of food. At the same time
we will be offering the shop-
per a pleasing mixture of
jewelry, books and baked
treats. We are offering peo-
ple a late winter treat — jew-
elry and sweets — all for a
good cause.”
Food Share will be accept-
ing donations of jewelry for
next year’s sale.
Siuslaw Public Library will host
author/essayist Robert Leo Heilman
at the main branch of the library in
Florence, 1460 Ninth St., on Satur-
day, March 16, at 1 p.m. The prolif-
ic Oregon author and commentator
will share and discuss his latest book,
“Children of Death.”
In his third book, critically-ac-
claimed and award-winning Heilman
pursues three unanswered questions
from his childhood. Growing up in a
family in which his German-speak-
ing grandparents had migrated to the
United States from Russia during the
first decade of the 20th century he
found himself wondering: Where had
the Heilmans lived before they mi-
grated to Russia? Why did they leave
their home to settle there? And, most
poignantly, what happened to the rel-
atives who stayed behind in Russia?
In his book-length meditation, the
author takes the reader on his entranc-
ing journeys retracing the migrations
of his family from Alsace, France, to
Russia in 1810 and on to Kazakhstan
and the American Midwest.
Along the way, he reveals the history
Myrtle Creek Oregon author and
essayist Robert Leo Heilman
of the various generations of his fami-
ly and the fates of a farming family in
search of land, freedom and security
through troubled times ranging from
the Reign of Terror in 18th century
France, and on to the Russian Revolu-
tion, Stalin’s purges and World War II.
The effects of his German-Russian
ethnic group’s migrations still linger
today, sparking controversy in mod-
ern day Germany.
Heilman says of his newest work,
“The title for my new book is not ex-
actly a cheery, feel-good one. Much
of the book involves the history of
Russia, where my ancestors lived for
100 years. The title refers to the terror
famine of 1932-33 in Ukraine.”
Heilman has appeared at the li-
brary before to share his collection
of works on life in Oregon. He re-
ceived a warm welcome and praise
for his insight into Oregon life when
he shared his essays at the Mapleton
Branch in 2016 and again at the main
branch in 2017.
This free program is open to the
public and will certainly appeal not
only to fans of Heilman’s previous
work but also to the historian and
genealogist. Copies of the book will be
available after the discussion.
