With rain continuing this week, the
Florence Skatepark was an unusual
sight Tuesday with no skateborders
or cyclists riding the concrete rises,
bowls or tunnel. The empty park
resembled a patchwork of painted
surfaces over a Mars-like terrain.
More rain and a chance of light snow
is predicted over the next few days in
the Siuslaw valley.

Lane County parks introduces new parking pass app
Lane County Parks is introduc-
ing Passport, a mobile app that
will allow park visitors to quickly
purchase a day pass to any of Lane
County’s 68 parks.
“It is really important that we
continue to look for ways to make
it easier and more convenient to
purchase the required passes,” said
Park Manager Brett Henry. “Pass-
port will allow visitors to quickly
purchase a day pass using their
phones — and if they know they’ll
be out of service at the park itself
they can take a few minutes to do
it before they leave home. No more
hunting for the kiosk or digging
through car cup holders to find
enough change.”
The app itself is free for users.
Users create a profile that in-
cludes the vehicle license plate and
payment information in order to
pay on the go. Once purchased,
a day pass is valid across all Lane
County parks.
“The app will also help us gath-
er better information about which
parks receive the most visitors and
use that data to make decisions
about park improvements,”

MID COAST LAKES:
Stocking of the mid-coast
lakes will begin the first
week of February. Check
the stocking schedule
online for dates and loca-
tions of stockings. These
early stockings include:
Alder and Dune Lake,
Cleawox, Lost Lake,
Munsel Lake, Thissel
Pond, Munsel Lake, Big
Creek Reservoirs and
Olalla Creek Reservoir.
SIUSLAW
RIVER:
Winter steelhead
Winter steelhead fishing
has still been good on the
Siuslaw with the lower
water. The Siuslaw holds a
little bit of color even when
it gets low which helps the
fishing conditions. The
numbers of fish returning
to the Whitaker Creek trap
have increased for the end
of January and now into
February.
Fish are being caught
every day with the best
fishing around Whitaker
Creek for both the bank
and boat anglers.
Lake Creek steelhead
fishing has been fair this
year so far. Currently, Lake
Creek is low and clear cre-
ating tough conditions and
could benefit from some
rain and a bump in the
river level.
Hatchery fish in the
Siuslaw system return to
Whitaker Creek (Siuslaw)
and Green Creek (Lake
Creek).
Bobber fishing with
bait/jigs, drift fishing, and
casting lures are good
techniques to catch a
Siuslaw winter steelhead.
Trout fishing in streams
will reopen May 22, 2019.
ALSEA RIVER: Winter
steelhead
Winter steelhead fishing
has slowed down on the
Alsea with the low and
clear water conditions.
Numbers entering the
Alsea hatchery trap have
slowed down as well.
A few fish are still being
caught everyday but it will
improve with the next shot
of rain. The extended fore-
casts look cold and dry
which will continue to the
low and clear conditions.
These conditions slow
migration and congregate
the fish that are trying to
move upriver in the lower
portions of the Alsea River.
There is an old saying
“when the water is low fish
low, when the water is high
