No services are planned, arrangements under the di- rection of Dunes Memorial Chapel. GRADUATE NOTES Holly Hicks of West- lake, a senior at George Fox University and graduate of Siuslaw High School, was among those who earned dean’s list recognition at George Fox for the fall 2018 semester. Traditional undergrad- uate students must earn a 3.5 grade point average or above on 12 or more hours of graded work to earn a spot on the dean’s list. County Health Dept. offering school immunization clinic To help parents get their child’s immunizations up- to-date for this year’s Ex- clusion Day, Lane County Public Health’s (LCPH) Communicable Disease Program will be hosting a 2-day, walk-in immuniza- tion clinic, Tuesday, Feb. 19 and Wednesday, Feb. 20. Every year, Lane County Public Health officials re- view more than 50,000 re- cords in order to make sure children’s immunizations are up-to-date. For those children whose immuniza- tion record is incomplete, a letter has been sent out to their parents asking them to schedule the required im- munizations for their child. “We know that it can be challenging for parents to find the time to schedule their child’s immunizations, hopefully these clinics will ease that burden,” said Lane County Communicable Dis- ease Supervisor, Cindy Mor- gan. This year, LCPH sent out just over 1,600 letters as compared to last year’s 1,606 and 2,222 the year be- fore. The increase is good news for public health offi- cials but highlights areas for improvement. In order to achieve what’s called “com- munity immunity” or “herd immunity”, which protects any given population from widespread communicable disease outbreaks, 94 per- cent of the population must be immunized and that is still not the case. “Its easy to think of your child’s immunizations as ex- clusive to their own, individ- ual health,” said Lane Coun- ty Chief Health Officer, Dr. Patrick Luedtke. “The fact is, each and every one of our children’s immunizations af- fects their health, the health of their classmates and the health of our entire commu- nity.” The clinic will take place on the 3rd floor, in room 310, at Lane County Health & Human Services Char- nelton Building at 151 W. Seventh Ave., from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Families who live in neighboring communities within Western Lane Coun- ty can call Lane County Pub- lic Health at 541-682-4041 to schedule an appointment at one of the other Commu- nity Health Centers of Lane County Clinics. Cost should not be a bar- rier to required immuni- zations, which are covered by the Vaccine for Children program. Children can also receive their required im- munizations at their private provider, or school-based health clinics. Imp or t a nt : C h i l d re n whose parents choose to exempt them from required immunizations may still be excluded in the event of an outbreak at that school per OAR 581-022-2220. There will also be some other important updates from the Siuslaw Watershed Council (SWSC) as well as information from the OSU extension office on manag- ing non-native species. The meeting will be held at 10868 E. Mapleton Rd. in Mapleton, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This will be an infor- mative meeting, open to the public, especially for those who recently received free native plants from the SWSC. Come learn how to ensure those plants thrive and grow to their full eco- logical potential. include new sidewalks, util- ity undergrounding, new lighting, landscaping, bike lanes and gateway plazas. In addition, ODOT will be repaving Highway 101 between the Siuslaw River Bridge and the Highway 126 intersection. The meeting will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. at the Flor- ence Events Center. During the meeting, the City and ODOT will present the details of the project.
