Come Feb. 22, four Viking
wrestlers — sophomores Elijah
LaCosse and Ryan Jennings,
junior Matthew Horrillo and
senor Riley Jennings — will be
among the state's top wrestlers
competing for the title in their
respective weight brackets.
All told, six Vikings returned
from last weekend’s 4A Special
District 2 tournament in Junction
City with medals, including
sophomores Brady Libby at 120
pounds and Hector Garcia at 160
pounds.
“We really wrestled pretty
well,” Siuslaw coach Neil Wartnik
said of his underclassmen-domi-
nated team’s performance. “We
just don’t have the depth and
experience of other schools.”
Though Libby and Garcia were
able to medal, they just missed
qualifying for state.
LaCosse (126 lbs.) and Horrillo
(220 lbs.) each placed third in
their divisions, with brothers
Ryan (152 lbs.) and Ryan (170
lbs.) Jennings each placing
fourth.
LaCosse went 4-1 at the tour-
nament, earning his third-place
finish in a dramatic come-from-
behind win the consolation semi-
finals round against Blaise
Pindell of Philomath.
Pindell had won the bracket a
week earlier at the 29-team
Cottage Grove Invitational,
where LaCosse didn’t place.
On Saturday, the two faced off
for the third-place medal, with
Pindell holding a 2-point lead to
start the third round.
“Elijah worked hard for an
escape with just over a minute
left,” said Wartnik.

Then, with 45 seconds remain-
ing, LaCosse changed tactics and
out together a complicated take-
down sequence and scored a
takedown to tie the match.
LaCossee was then able to hold
Pindell to the mat for the remain-
ing 45 seconds to score the final,
match-winning point and third
place.
“Elijah worked very hard this
week to compete at 126 pounds,”
Wartnik said. “His performance
at district in that final match was
gutsy — the performance of the
week.”
Horrillo, Siuslaw’s other third-
place finisher, went 3-1 at dis-
trict, losing a nailbiter in the
championship semifinals match
when a move went awry with the
score tied at 1-1. His opponent

(0-8) and 4-18 overall.
In Friday's game, sophomores
Lindsey Long and Gracie
Freudenthal led Siuslaw's offense,
with ling scoring 6 points and
Freudenthal nabbing 13 boards.
Following last Friday's match-
up between defending state
champion Marshfield and
Siuslaw, the Pirates maintained
their undefeated status in the
Sky-Em (8-0) and imporved to
20-1 overall with a definitive
60-24 win over the Lady Vikings,

SALEM, Ore.—It’s free
to fish, crab or clam in
Oregon on Saturday and
Sunday, Feb. 16-17 of
President’s Day Weekend.
During these two days,
no fishing licenses or tags
(including a Combined
Angling Tag or Columbia
River Basin Endorsement)
are required to fish, crab
or clam anywhere in
Oregon for both residents
and
non-residents.
Although no licenses or
tags are required, all other
fishing regulations apply
including closures, bag
limits and size restrictions.
This time of year, the
best opportunity will be
winter steelhead on the
coast, stocked hatchery
rainbow trout in the
Willamette Valley and
mid-coast lakes, and
ice-fishing in northeast
and southeast Oregon.
Look for the latest on
fishing conditions and
regulations at ODFW’s
Weekly Recreation Report,
which is updated every
Thursday.
Also see the trout stock-
ing schedule to find out
when your local lake is
getting stocked with

RIVER:
Winter steelhead
Winter steelhead fishing
has still been good on the
Siuslaw with the lower
water. The Siuslaw holds a
little bit of color even when
it gets low which helps the
fishing conditions. The
numbers of fish returning
to the Whitaker Creek trap
have increased for the end
of January and now into
February.
Fish are being caught
every day with the best
fishing around Whitaker
Creek for both the bank
and boat anglers.
Lake Creek steelhead
fishing has been fair this
year so far. Currently, Lake
Creek is low and clear cre-
ating tough conditions and
could benefit from some
rain and a bump in the
river level.
Hatchery fish in the
Siuslaw system return to
