City Lights celebrating Joni Mitchell’s 75th birthday tomorrow
Honoring one of the
world’s most revered artists,
Joni Mitchell, on her 75th
birthday, “The Music Center
Presents Joni 75: A Birthday
Celebration” brings an in-
credible array of singers and
musicians to the big screen
at City Lights Cinemas on
Thursday, Feb. 7, with show-
times at 12:30 and 6:30 p.m.

fan Becky Goehring, who
requested this event come to
Florence, said, “I encourage
all Joni Mitchell fans to come

to this screening."
Captured live at the Dor-
othy Chandler Pavilion, this
special event features Brandi
Carlile; Glen Hansard; Em-
mylou Harris; Norah Jones;
Chaka Khan; Diana Krall;
Kris Kristofferson; Los Lo-
bos with La Marisoul, Cesar
Castro and Xochi Flores;
Graham Nash; James Taylor;
Seal; and Rufus Wainwright,
who will perform many of
Mitchell’s songs.
A music icon whose work
continues to inspire gen-
erations of artists, Mitchell
performed on the Dorothy
Chandler Pavilion stage in
1972 and 1974, with the Los
Angeles Times describing
her 1972 concert as "Joni
Mitchell in a Giant Living
Room."
Goehring stated what
many have felt over Joni’s
long performing life:
“Joni Mitchell was an
evocative female voice in my
youth, bending my musical
ear away from ‘The Monkees’
and other light pop-child
tunesmiths. She inspired an
instant connection at a time
when my world view was ex-
panding and helped me rec-
ognize, through many of her
lyrics, that I had a part to play
in my worlds, both personal
and communal.
“The ‘Big Yellow Taxi’
changed my perception of
the rapid development in my
community, she put words to
those first emerging feelings
of love in ‘A Case Of You,’ and
helped me see ‘Both Sides
Now’ in so many places in
my life.
“These and many other
songs will be interpreted on
stage in this thrilling concert
event.”
With nine Grammy awards
to her name and 16 Gram-
my nominations, Mitchell’s
catalog of music spans more
than five decades. In 2017,
Mitchell’s 1971 album “Blue”
was named number one on
National Public Radio’s list
of the 150 greatest albums
made by women.
Her work has no boundar-
ies and crosses genres from
folk and pop, to jazz and
world music.
Mitchell is also a prolific
painter and was once quoted
as saying, “I’m a painter first,
and a musician second.”
While Mitchell hails from
Canada, she has called Los
Angeles home for decades.

Mendoza is the supervi-
sor of the Lane County Asset
Building team of NEDCO.
He will provide information
about the NEDCO-City of
Florence partnership to de-
velop a cottage cluster of
homes using the community
land trust model at the old
Senior Center site on Airport
Road. The project will cluster
small homes around a com-
mon space shared by the en-
tire development.
The current plan propos-
es 12 homes, a mix of one-,
two- and three-bedroom
units, which will be for sale
to households with incomes
below 80 percent area medi-
an income.
The development will use
the land trust model to en-
sure long-term affordability
for buyers with low in-comes.
Land trusts are a unique
form of home ownership,
which have been successful-
ly used around the nation,
where the land itself is legally
separated from the structures
and held in trust by a non-
profit (NEDCO).

ing lead the team of counsel-
ors who support clients on
their path to financial stabil-
ity and homeownership, he
enjoys spending time with
his wife, four kids and a giant
lazy Great Dane.
The Florence Area Com-
munity Coalition hosts
monthly meetings to bring
information to the commu-
nity about projects, opportu-
nities and happenings. FACC
also hosts an annual Volun-
teer Appreciation Event to
honor the many volunteers
who make our community
wonderful.
