Siuslaw hosted teams from throughout
the region and from all classification levels
during its annual Nick Lutz Memorial Invi-
tational on Saturday, with the Viking boys
claiming several upset-wins to secure fourth
place overall — and the highest 4A finish at
the 18-team meet.
“The level of wrestling was outstanding,”
said Siuslaw coach Neil Wartnik. “So many of
the matches went down to the wire, with nu-
merous upsets throughout the day — and our
Vikings participated in a number of them.
“We came out on the upper hand several
times.”
Siuslaw junior heavyweight Matthew Hor-
rillo had the day's highest individual finish
for the Viking boys team as well as the biggest
upset. Coming into the tournament ranked
as the fourth seed, Horrillo went on to up-
end top seed 6A wrestler Benjamin Lutz of
Sheldon, 6-5, in the semi-finals match at 220
pounds. Down by 1 point in the final sec-
onds of the match, Horrillo turned the tables
by scoring a takedown for a 6-5 win. He then
went on to pin No. 2 seed Mike Montgomery,
nik. “His championship was impressive giv-
en that he defeated the second-, third- and
fourth-place finishers in the tournament — a
feat that is rare.”
Finishing second for the Viks was senior
170-pounder Riley Jennings, who won a pair
of tough matches — by pin and 15-12 deci-
sion — in order to reach the finals and face
Drew Swenson of Cottage Grove. Jennings
held the lead until the final seconds, when
Swenson tied the match with a penalty and
an escape, send it into overtime where he
won in sudden victory.
“Riley’s performance at 170 was outstand-
ing. He handled himself with great compo-
sure,” said Wartnik. “His development over
the season has been impressive.”
Siuslaw also got third-place finishes from
sophomores Brady Libby (120 lbs.), Elijah
LaCosse (132 lbs.) and Hector Garcia (160
lbs.)

placed third overall in the girls 130- three wins on the day to place fifth overall.

In the girls’ division, Siuslaw had outstand-
ing performances from its three wrestlers,
a senior from Elmira, in 4 minutes, 23 sec-

With both Marshfield teams ranked among the
top 3 in the state at the 4A division by the Oregon
School Activities Association (OSAA) — include
No. 1 for the Lady Pirates — Siuslaw knew it would
have its hands full in both instances.
And it was right.
The girls were the first to tip off at Marshfield,
where the top-ranked Lady Pirates wasted no time
in getting the upper hand, securing a 53-point lead
by halftime (63-10). Though the Lady Viks were
able to nearly double their first-half scoring in the
third and fourth quarters with 19 points, Marshfield
easily held on for the win, 79-29.
