The group Florence OR-
ganizes (FOR) was formed
in the wake of the 2016
election and members have
taken the lead in coordinat-
ing the local rally in support
of many other Women’s
Wave events being held this
weekend. The debate sur-
rounding the issues of sex-
ually-oriented interactions
continues to be a subject of

public discourse, adding to
the many calls for increased
respect for women on every
level of society.
In this light, Nora Kent,
one of the event coordina-
tors, announced a late addi-
tion to Saturday’s schedule:
Rep. Caddy McKeown, who
will kick off the Women’s
March at noon “… to help
celebrate the increasing
number of women who play
an important role in pro-
moting our democracy at
the government level,” Kent
said.
McKeown was re-elected
in November as the State
House Representative from
District 9.
The Florence Senior Cen-
ter will be the location of a
luncheon, offered after the
noon rally, with menu items
donated by Los Amigos,
Rosa’s, Dominos and Ixta-
pa.
There will be live music
and dancing at the center
after lunch and attendees
will be encouraged to bid
on a number of silent auc-
tion items and contribute
for the food and entertain-
ment.
The funds raised during
the afternoon events will
be donated to “Heart of
the Coast,” which hopes
to make an improvement
in the housing shortage in
Florence.
Eric Hauptman is a mem-
ber of the Florence Plan-
ning Commission and is
heading up the “Heart of
the Coast Housing Alliance”
(HCHA), which has incor-
porated recent changes in
the city building codes into
the group’s business model.
“HCHA’s plan is to mar-
ket the advantages of the
Accessory Dwelling Units
(ADU’s) to homeown-
ers in our target area. The
Florence City Council has
addressed the building of
ADUs by fast tracking ap-
plications, as well as waiv-
ing system development
charges,” Hauptman said.
The 2019 Women’s Wave
will begin Jan. 19 at noon at
the Florence United Meth-
odist Church, 333 King-
wood St., and continue at
the Florence Senior Center,
1570 Kingwood St.

“It’s a project that has
been ongoing through the
past couple of years through
management changes and
other things that got it put
off,” Huntington said.
It was a long road to get
to this point.
When the damage first
occurred,
disagreements
occurred on how complex
the final fix would be, and
how it should be funded.
What caused the dam-
age was also of concern,
whether the damage came
suddenly from the riv-
er water, or if it happened
slowly over time. It turned
out both were factors in the
cause.
After an initial agreement
on how the project should
move forward, funding
went through multiple
delays. First, the Federal
Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) put a hold
on emergency relief due to
hurricanes in September
2017. Then there were fur-
ther questions regarding
who actually owned the
property, and a lot line ad-
justment had to be made,
moving the project more
to the west. Because of this,
some of the plans had to be
redrawn and resubmitted.
However, through that
time the major concern of
the project, cost, was alle-
viated. Originally, the port
was tasked with paying 25
percent of the $225,000
project, with FEMA footing
the rest of the bill.
“But since that time, we
received 100 percent of the
funds,” Huntington said.
“Business Oregon is cov-
ering the matching for it
through its special public
works fund, and so now the
whole project is 100 percent
funded for us.”
Fixing the erosion is just
one of many major long-
term projects Hunting-
ton has helped shepherd
through in the past year,
including replacing the sign
for Mo’s Restaurant, replac-
ing decks on the gangway
and installing gates on the
port’s docks.
“It’s actually caused a lot
of people to want to be in
the marina because of the
security gates,” Huntington
said. “We’ve had more peo-
ple want to get in there.”
For possible future proj-
ects, Huntington listed
replacing the bulkhead,
securing funds for dredg-
ing and creating public
committees to look at other
projects the port could take
on.
