Van Fans fundraiser
will be ‘Fun and games’
Van Fans will be host-
ing a card party event on
Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the
Florence Elks Lodge 1858,
located at 1686 12th St.
Participants can check in
with friends at 11:30 a.m.
for a day of card games and
lunch.
Friends of Florence Van
Fans is a nonpolitical or-
ganization that sponsors
this event twice a year. All
proceeds go to support the
Cancer Bus, which trans-
ports patients every week-
day to and from Eugene
and Springfield for radia-
tion treatments.
Tickets are now on sale
for $15, which includes
lunch.

Local resident raising funds
for Crohn’s, Colitis research
Florence resident and
patients advocate Hope
Sneddon is actively raising
funds for her participation
in the Crohn’s and Colitis
Foundation Team Chal-
lenge next month in Aus-
tin, Texas.
Sneddon will be running
a half-marathon and the
money she raises will go
directly to the Crohn’s and
Colitis Foundation for re-
search.
She has put together a
gift package valued at near-
ly $500 that will be given
away on Feb. 5, 2019.
Tickets for the drawing
are $10 each and are avail-
able by donating through
Sneddon’s
fundraising

The gift package in-
cludes a $50 gift certifi-

There is also a $15 gift
certificate for Los Amigos
in Florence, two handmade
pottery items from local
educator and artist Kim
Pickell and a 5-foot-by-8-
foot area rug from Roby’s
Furniture and Appliance.
The winning ticket will
be selected by a random
drawing on Feb. 5 and the
winner will be contacted.

Germany, Scandinavia subject
of next Rhody Society meeting
In May of 2018, Florence
Chapter of the Rhododen-
dron Society President
Mike Bones attended the
national meeting of the
American Rhododendron
Society in Bremen, Ger-
many.
While there, many side
excursions were available
to visit gardens through-
out Germany and parts of
Scandinavia.
Bones traveled to as
many gardens as possible,
absorbing the myriad of
plants, gastronomic de-
lights and various cultures
of the area.
His presentation, as seen
through the lens of his con-
tinuously chattering cam-
era, will be both education-
al and entertaining.
The meeting will be held
Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the
Presbyterian Church, 3996
Highway 101.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
for refreshments, followed
by the meeting and presen-
tation at 7 p.m.
Community Chorus supports Siuslaw Choral Dept.
At the Dec. 8 Flor-
ence Community Cho-
rus Christmas Concert,
board member David
Mills presented a check
in the amount of $500
from the chorus to the
Siuslaw Choral De-
partment, represented
by Siuslaw Middle and
High School Chorus
Instructor Bruce Mor-
ganti.
Morganti directed the
Siuslaw Viking Gold
Chorus’ performance at
the concert.
The purpose of the
Community Chorus is
to promote the perfor-
mance of choral music
for those who love to
sing, especially encour-
aging students and sing-
ers of all ages and abil-
ities in pursuing vocal
arts.
Assisting the high
school choral program
directly meets the cho-
rus’ goal.
This award was made
possible because of con-
tributions from Florence
Community Chorus pa-
trons and those attend-
ing chorus concerts.
Registration and re-
hearsal for the spring
concert began Feb. 7.

Community invited to Fresh Impressions reception
The Friends of FEC and
the Gallery Committee are
offering exhibits in Galleries
One and Five, celebrating
the artwork of students from
Siuslaw and Mapleton high
schools, and home-schooled
students.
Art teachers from Siuslaw,
Kim Pickell, and Mapleton,
Jessi Nelson, have been in-
strumental in helping stu-
dents provide art for this
exhibit — The Fresh Impres-
sions.
Additionally, the Friends
of FEC have supported this
special event by providing
funds to students for mat-
ting and framing their art,
prize money for the awards
ceremony, and refreshments
for the fun and casual recep-
tion.
