Siuslaw’s wrestling teams finished in the middle of the pack at the multi-team Bend Invite

Siuslaw News
The Viking boys and girls
wrestling teams continued a
busy holiday break last weekend,
participating in the multi-team,
multi-divisional Bend Invite wres-
tling tournament, where both Siu-
slaw teams fared well among some
of the re-gion's top wrestlers.
In the boys matches, senior Ri-
ley Jennings won four out of five
matches to help lead the Viks to
an eight-place team finish.
Jennings, wrestling at 170
pounds, pinned his way to three
of his wins, and won by major
decision (11-2), with his only loss
coming by fall in the first round of
his second match.
Jennings placed fifth over-
all and scored a total of 16 team
points on the day.
Meanwhile, sophomores Brady
Libby (126 lbs.) and Elijah La-
Cosse (132 lbs.) each placed
fourth in their brackets, and Ryan
Jennings placed sixth at 145 lbs.
Other top finishers for the Vi-
king boys included sophomores
Hector Garcia who placed sixth
at 160 lbs., and junior Matthew
Horillo who went 2-2 to score 3
team points.
In the girls matches, freshmen
Hayden Muller and Bailey Over-
ton had the day’s top scoring for
Siuslaw. Muller, wrestling at 135
lbs., won her first two matches by
pin, but lost in the third match to
finish 2-1 for second overall.
Overton pinned Stephanie
Miller of LaPine in the opening
match in 2:13, but lost her next
two matches before win-ning her
fourth match by forfeit to place
third at 120 lbs.
Muller scored 14 of Siuslaw's
29 points for seventh place, with
7 points from Overton, 4 points
from sophomore Adriana Ed-
wards (135 lbs.) and 4 points for
junior Kenga Bugajska at 140-145
lbs.

Though it’s early in the season, the
Sailors were already facing a must-win
situation when they traveled to
McKenzie last Friday to play the Eagles.
In the team’s two previous league games
— against Mohawk and Crow — the
Sailors had lost both match-ups, in large
part to costly mistakes, giving up an
8-point lead in the fourth quarter
against Mohawk, and missing 19 free
throws against Crow.
“I challenged the team to take the
game seriously and make every move on
the court with purpose,” said Mapleton
coach Eric Wolgamott. “We needed to

Winter steelhead are
showing up on the
Siuslaw. Fishing has
been slow in December
but the recent rains will
bring in more fish as the
river drops into shape
later this week. Hatchery

Green Creek (Lake

with bait/jigs, drift fish-

good techniques to catch
a Siuslaw winter steel-

ALSEA RIVER: Fall
Chinook, winter steel-
head
Winter steelhead fish-
ing is starting to improve
on the Alsea River.
People are catching fish
throughout the system
and the recent rains
should have fish on the
move headed for the
hatchery on the North
Fork Alsea.
Steelhead fishing will
continue to improve as
the later wild broodstock
fish start to show up in
better numbers in
January and February.
The Alsea still gets a
good amount of the early
returning stock that
peaks in December and
January, as well as a later
stock that peaks in
February and March.
Expect more fish to show
up with each rise in the
river level from now
through April. Bobber
fishing with jigs/bait,
drift fishing, and casting
lures are all effective
ways to catch these hard
fighting fish.
Trout fishing in
streams will reopen May
22, 2019.
