Central Oregon Coast residents are
invited to start the New Year off on the
right foot by participating in the 9th
Annual Yachats New Year’s Day Peace
Hike this Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019.
Participants will proceed from the
Yachats Commons (441 N. Hwy 101),
along the 804 and Amanda Trails to
the Amanda Grotto south of town,
where a Peace Ceremony will take
place. The distance from the Commons
to the grotto is approximately three
miles.
Hikers will traverse both paved
roads and narrow dirt trail surfaces
with some steps and moderate inclines.
Sturdy shoes, layered clothing and
walking sticks are recommended.
In addition, for both hikers and
non-hikers who would like to acknowl-
edge and honor Amanda’s journey,
there will be a candlelight vigil for
peace at Yachats’ Little Log Church,
328 W. Third St.
The timeline of events will be as
follows:
• 9:15–10:15 a.m.
Check in will take place at the
Yachats Commons where hikers will
receive their route maps and com-
memorative buttons. All hikers will
also be required to sign a liability waiv-
er at check-in.
• 9:30–10 a.m.
Members of the Confederated
Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua
and Siuslaw Indians (CTCLUSI) will
tell the story of Amanda (for whom
the Amanda Trail is named) at Yachats’
Little Log Church. Hikers are encour-
aged to check in at the Commons
beforehand so that they may continue
to the Amanda Grotto immediately
following the story telling.
• 10:15 a.m.
All hikers should be checked in by
10:15 and on their way to the Amanda
Grotto to arrive in time for the peace
ceremony.
• 11:15 a.m. to noon

Amanda Grotto.
• Noon

Following their 54-33 win over the
Tigers at the Bandon Dunes Holiday
Invitational, the Viking boys basketball
team kept its winning momentum
going on Glenn Butler Court Thursday
night against Reedsport.
While freshman Brandon Thornton
and sophomore Jacob Foskett powered
Siuslaw’s offense against the Tigers a
week earlier at Bandon with 26 points
and 24 points, respectively, it was senior
Dylan Wynn who set the offensive
tempo Thursday against the Braves.
However, Siuslaw got off to a slow
start against an upperclassmen-domi-
nated Reedsport roster, falling behind
11-2 by the end of the opening period
— with a pair of freethrows from
Foskett providing the only scoring for
the Vikings.
But that all changed less than 10 sec-
onds into the second quarter as Siuslaw
went on a 7-0 run with scoring from
Foskett and 5 points from Wynn —
including the first of four 3-pointers in
the game.
The run prompted a Reedsport tim-
eout, but Siuslaw kept the pace going as
Foskett drained two more freethrows
and Thornton scored on a steal and
fastbreak lay-up to take Siuslaw’s first
lead of the game.
Siuslaw never really looked back.
With scoring from junior Caleb
Hennessee and freshman Brody Terry,
the Viks held a narrow lead, 21-20, then
extended it to 24-20 on a buzzer-beat-
ing 3-pointer from Wynn to end the
half.
The third period was all Siuslaw as

The Lady Vikings basketball
team improved to 4-8 after picking
up another win following its 30-8
win against Bandon during the
Bandon Dunes Holiday Invitational
a week earlier.
Thursday night at Glenn Butler
Court, Siuslaw made it back-to-
back wins with a lopsided 36-point
victory over the visiting Braves.
The Vikings took the lead quick-
ly, building a 20-6 advantage mid-
way through the second period
with scoring from sophomores
Lindsey Long, Savannah Morris
and Gracie Freudenthal, and senior
Alyssa Richards.
Siuslaw scored 7 points in the
last 40 seconds of the half, includ-
ing a 3-pointer from Morris, for a
29-6 lead entering the break.
“We’ve been working on our
man-to-man defense every game
and it's continuing to improve,” said
Siuslaw coach Chad Smith.
“Offensively, we’re still struggling a
bit against the zone defense but
we're starting to understand the
importance of moving the ball and
knowing where to be. When we
move the ball, we are successful.”
The Viks were also successful
beyond the arc against Reedsport’s
zone, thanks to shooting from
sophomore Brea Blankenship, who
opened the third period with back-
to-back 3-pointers in the first min-
ute of the half. Long also sank one
from outside the arc, with
Freudenthal and senior Madison
Reynolds scoring inside the paint
to move ahead 45-10.
