Ladies of Elks bring ‘Touch of Home’ to Oregon veterans
The Ladies of Elks Touch
of Home committee collect-
ed donations of clothing and
cookies for the three Oregon
Veterans’ Homes.
On Dec. 10, Dave Russell
made a delivery to the home
in White City. On Dec. 11 and
12, Leo and Shirley Stapleton
and their grandsons made de-
liveries to the homes in The
Dalles and Salem.
All the items and cookies
received were evenly divided
between the three homes.
“The Veterans’ Homes real-
ly look forward to the clothing
and cookies and are deeply ap-
preciative of all that is done for
them,” said Linda Tank, Ladies
of Elks publicity chair. “We in
turn thank them for their ser-
vice to our country.”
For this collection, the
Levi’s store in Eugene donated
hundreds of dollars’ worth of
jeans, shirts and jackets.
“The Ladies of Elk helped
Leo and Shirley sort every-
thing,” said Tank. “And a
special thank you to Pam
Stimmell, Laura Matheny,
Jane Hensen, Shirley Horn-
back, Marianne Palassou, Jan
Brandow, Donna Alexander,
Judy Beleaut and Pat Thomp-
son for helping.”
In addition, Levi’s donated
108 pairs of children’s jeans,
worth $9,080.25.
The Ladies of Elks sent
them to the Chico Elks Lodge
in California to be donated to
the children of Paradise who
lost everything in the fire for
when they are able to return to
school.
Well over 600 dozen cookies
were donated by the Ladies of
Elks, the Lodge members, the
Quilt Guild, the Rolling Elks,
the Band of Brothers, VFW
and many individuals.
Thus, each home received
over 200 dozen cookies.
Hundreds of pairs of pants and other clothing was collected and donated to
Oregon veterans as part of the Ladies of Elks “Touch of Home” project.

City Club to feature Siuslaw News editors in January

speakers at the City Club be-
ginning at noon, Thursday,
Jan. 3, 2019, at the Ocean
Dunes Golf Course Club
House, 3345 Munsel Lake
Road.
People are asked to note
that City Club meetings for
2019 have been moved to the
first Thursday of the month
and will be held permanently
at Ocean Dunes.
A limited lunch is avail-
able for purchase prior to the
meeting.
In addition to his duties
as editor of the local news-
paper, Hickson has been an
award-winning
syndicated
columnist with weekly offer-
ings of wit and humor appear-
ing in dozens of newspapers
in the U.S. and Canada. He
has been awarded “Best Local
Column” from both the Or-
egon Newspaper Publishers
Association and the Society of
Professional Journalists.

Hickson is also a published
author of two books, “Hu-
mor at the Speed of Life” and
“Pearls of Writing Wisdom:
From 16 shucking years as a
columnist.”
Prior to launching his ca-
reer in journalism at the Siu-
slaw News, Hickson was a
corporate chef in Dallas, Tex-
as and Atlanta, Ga.
He has deep roots in the
Florence community and,
among other activities, has
served as a volunteer firefight-
er with Siuslaw Valley Fire
and Rescue from 2011 to 2016
before being elected to the
SVFR Board of Directors in
WEDNESDAY THURSDAY
November 2016.

ious theatrical performances
around town.
Hickson said he believes in
the importance of local news-
papers providing informa-
tion, chronicling history and
encouraging dialogue that
builds stronger communi-
ties. He will be talking about
his 20 years of experiences at
our local newspaper, as well as
the role of small-town papers
throughout America.
Meyer, the Siuslaw News
feature editor, formats, edits
and creates the special fea-
tures and regular editions of
the twice-weekly Florence-ar-
ea newspaper.
She says her main goal is,
“to live a creative life.” Her
work at the paper suggests
that she has achieved her goal.
In December, the Florence
Area Chamber of Commerce
announced that her design
was chosen for the logo of the
2019 Rhododendron Festival.
Taking the theme of “Coastal
Canvas” and a desire to pro-
mote the arts in the area, Mey-
er designed the logo with an
artist’s palette and paintbrush
in mind. The design also fea-
tures the Heceta Head Light-
house and Florence’s iconic
rhododendrons.
When not working, Meyer
volunteers with local theater
and community groups. She
also likes to read, make art
and write fiction for young
adults.
She has an MFA in Chil-
dren’s Literature and looks
forward to publishing some of
her own books in the future.
