Siuslaw from 1B to the Lady Billies a week earlier at the Les Schwab Eagle Boost- er Club Classic, where Pleasant Hill narrowly beat Siuslaw on a 3-point buzzer beater, 50-48. But Friday night was anoth- er story, due in large part to Pleasant Hill sophomores An- geni Yeo and Alexa Ellis, who combined for 44 of the Billies' 71 points. Siuslaw kept things relatively close in the fi rst period, getting a late start off ensively but stay- ing within 4 points for much of the quarter. Sophomore point guard Lindsey Long sank the fi rst Siu- slaw bucket, off the glass, to cut the Billies' lead to 3 points, 5-2. Pleasant Hill sank a free throw, but sophomore post Gracie Freudenthal drove for a lay-up to ut Siuslaw within a basket, 6-4. Th e Billies sank a long 3-pointer against the Vikings' zone, with the two teams trad- ing baskets for the rest of the period as Pleasant Hill held a 13-7 lead. Siuslaw scored eight points in the second period with re- bounding from senior Alys- sa Richards, Freudenthal and Long, but turnovers — along with Pleasant Hill free throws — extended the Vikings defi cit, 37-15, entering the half. In the second half, Pleasant Hill built on its lead and went on to secure a 71-35 win. Th e boys were next on the fl oor, where Siuslaw fresh- man Braydon Th ornton was hot from both sides of the arc, claiming a team-high 16 points against the Billies. Fishing should start to pick up soon with each rise in the river levels. Bobber fishing with bait/jigs, drift fishing, and casting lures are good techniques to catch a Siuslaw winter steelhead. Steelhead fishing remains open in the closed Chinook areas of the Siuslaw and Lake Creek. Due to lower than expected returns and conservation con- cerns, fall Chinook fishing on the Siuslaw remains closed upstream of the Tiernan boat ramp (downstream of Mapleton). Below the deadline the bag limit for fall Chinook is reduced to one adult Chinook per day and a limit of 3 through the remainder of the season. Chinook fishing con- tinues to be slow in the open area. All wild coho must be released for the 2018 fall salmon season. Lake Creek, a tributary of the Siuslaw River, is closed for the 2018 fall salmon season. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019. ALSEA RIVER: Fall Chinook, winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has begun on the Alsea River. The popular North Fork Alsea fishery opened on Dec. 1. Fishing has been slow so far, the river is low and clear and water temperatures have dropped with the cold nights and east winds. During these conditions, the lower Alsea can be good as fish slow their migration and spend more time lower in the system. Expect things to pick up this week with the change in weather and more rain in the forecast. The Alsea still gets a good amount of the early returning stock that peaks in December and January, as well as a later stock that peaks in February and March. Expect more fish to show up with each rise in the river level from now through April. Bobber fishing with jigs/bait, drift fishing, and casting lures are all effective ways to catch these hard fighting fish. Reminder: Winter steelhead fishing remains open in the areas closed to Chinook.
