SAMPSON—Jon

died Nov.
30, 2018,

erside Hos-
pital.
He was
born
in
Coos Bay
Jon Sampson
and
was
proud of
his maternal family history of
being Oregon pioneers who
crossed the plains in the 1880s.
He was equally proud of his
paternal Finnish heritage. His
formative years were spent in
Florence. Jon grew up there
fishing, hunting and playing
football at Siuslaw High School.
After high school, he attended
the University of Oregon, class
of 1962, and upon graduating
joined the U.S. Army, where he
served for 20 years.
Jon was a Vietnam veteran,
serving two tours and earning
his Combat Infantry Badge.
his awards included the Army
Commendation medal, two
Bronze Stars for meritorious
service, and the Legion of Mer-
it.
Jon loved camping, sailing
with friends, Maine vacations,
driving to Florida each winter
to watch the Super Bowl with
his best friend, organic garden-
ing, his old white Chevy pick-
up truck, and in his more ac-
tive years cutting, splitting and
stacking wood.
He also loved his volun-
teer work at Hands Across
Mathews.
He is survived by his wife of
52 years, Barbara; his broth-
er Dean and sister-in-law Pa-
tricia Sampson of Bainbridge
Island, Wash., Ore.; his sister
Patty Sampson of Redmond,
Ore.; nephews Greg Sampson
and Marq de Soncoeur of Se-
attle; Rusty Libby (and family)
of Florence; Jeff Libby of Flor-
ence; his neice Becky (and fam-
ily) of Redmond, Ore.; and one
spoiled and beloved dog, Bella.
Visitation was held at Fos-
ter-Faulkner Funeral Home
Mathews on Dec. 10. Services
were held that day, also at Fos-
ter-Faulkner.

Nov. 27
• Matthew James Richner
pleaded no contest to theft. He
must perform 80 hours of com-
munity service.
• Hannah Mac-Lynn pleaded
guilty to theft and resisting ar-
rest. She must pay $250 in fines.
• Heather Ann Rowles plead-
ed no contest to resisting arrest
and criminal trespass. She was
sentenced to 5 days in the Flor-
ence City Jail. She must pay $525
in fines and not contact or be in
or about the residence or place
of employment of the victim .
Dec. 4
• Jeffrey Ray Hollingsworth
pleaded guilty to disorderly
conduct. She must pay $399.91
in fines.
• Virgil Duane Bechtold
pleaded no contest to harass-
ment and unauthorized entry
to a motor vehicle. He must pay
$450 in fines and not contact or
be in or about the residence or
place of employment of the vic-
tim.
